NCAA Basketball Championship Overview: What We Know So Far
The men might be having a tournament of unprecedented upsets, but the women aren’t without their precedent-breakers. No. 1 Stanford, usually a fixture in the regional tournaments, fell to No. 8 Ole Miss in the second round, the first overall 1-seed to drop out before the Sweet Sixteen since 2009. Another No. 1 knock out, Indiana, was also in the second round, when the No. 9 Hurricanes harried the Hoosiers to a 70-68 triumph.
It’s the first time since 1998 more than one No. 1 has been dumped out of the tournament before the Sweet Sixteen, which also saw No. 1 Stanford upset, that time by No. 16 Harvard. It was also the first time in the women’s or men’s competitions that a 16-seed beat a 1-seed.
The UConn Huskies, with the most March Madness wins at 11, failed to make it as far as the Elite Eight before getting smacked down by the Buckeyes in the Sweet Sixteen. And Villanova’s NCAA top-scorer Maddy Siegrist couldn’t save the Wildcats from getting blown away by the Hurricanes in the same round.
Which brings us to the NCAA Women’s Final Four, the National Semifinal.
No. 1 South Carolina Gamecocks
Dynamic duo Aliyah Boston and Zia Cooke scored a combined 40 points against No. 2 Maryland in the Elite Eight. Before that, the team steamrolled UCLA, South Florida, and Norfolk State.
The defending champs are (knock wood) on a year+ long winning streak, 42 games, 36-0 for the season. Under head coach Dawn Staley, they’re poised to become the 10th team in NCAA Women’s B-ball history to shoot the moon and go undefeated all the way to the title.
This would net them back-to-back championships (only the fourth team to have done so) in their third straight Final Four.
No. 2 Iowa Hawkeyes
The Hawkeyes made their first Final Four in 30 years by defeating the Louisville Cardinals. Earlier victories include Colorado, Georgia, and Southeastern Louisiana.
Player of the Year Caitlin Clark’s 41-point triple-double is a first-ever in women’s or men’s NCAA tournaments. Her fellow starters, Gabbie Marshall, Kate Martin, McKenna Warnock, and Monika Czinano, all high-percentage shooters themselves, are why Iowa is the highest scoring team in the country.
No. 3 LSU Tigers
Head coach Kim Mulkey’s rebuilding program has paid off with this, her fifth Final Four. Two new team members fresh from the transfer portal helped LSU knock off Miami: former Terrapin Angel Reese and former Aggie Alexis Morris. Their defeat of the Hurricanes gets them a spot against the Hokies this weekend, their first Final Four in 15 years.
Before Miami, the Tigers devoured Utah, Michigan, and Hawaii.
No. 1 Virginia Tech Hokies
Final Four first-timers Virginia Tech have been winning games since January, a 15-game streak second only to South Carolina’s marathon. Their victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes was thanks in large part to Georgia Amoore and Elizabeth Kitley, along with head coach Kenny Brooks. Kitley alone posted a 25-point double-double and 12 rebounds in the Ohio State game.
Virginia Tech’s earlier-round vanquished opponents were Tennessee, South Dakota State, and Chattanooga.

ESPN on Sling TV is no problem, it’s included in Sling Orange, which also has Disney channels and, crucially, ESPN3. Sling doesn’t carry ABC, but ABC sports events are simulcast on ESPN3. So that means you can watch both games on the 31st on ESPN, then the Final a couple of days later on ESPN3. All for $40.00/mo.
Watching the boys’ Final is a little harder. It’s on CBS and Sling doesn’t carry CBS. But that doesn’t mean you can’t watch it for less than the $65-75 the big services charge. You have two main options: take advantage of Sling’s free antenna offer (yes, you read that right: free) or sign up for Paramount+ Premium at $9.99/mo (Black Friday deal). Either one will get you reliable access to your local CBS affiliate.
