The remaining six teams in each conference compete based on their final seeds. The top seed plays the bottom seed, and so on. For each conference, it works like this:

  • #7 Seed at #2 Seed
  • #6 Seed at #3 Seed
  • #5 Seed at #4 Seed.

Los Angeles Chargers are seeded #5 with the Jacksonville Jaguars seeded as #4, even though they have a worse record.

Chargers vs Jaguars Wild Card Game Analysis

After a disastrous 2021 season, the Jacksonville Jaguars hired former Super Bowl Champion coach, Doug Pederson to take over as their new head coach ahead of the 2022 campaign. Pederson, widely regarded as a quarterback guru, was handed the opportunity to work with former number 1 overall pick, Trevor Lawrence.

While the Jaguars got off to a bit of a slow start going 2-6 in their first eight games, the pride of Duval County, Florida quickly turned things around in the back half of the season, including a five-game winning streak to end the season.

Their NFL week 18 victory over the AFC South rival Tennessee Titans clinched the division and landed Jacksonville in the playoffs for the first time since 2017. But they were helped by a particularly weak division where all rivals (Titans, Houston Texans, and Indianapolis Colts) were under 500.

In addition to Trevor Lawrence, the Jaguars will also look to RB, Trevor Etienne as they go up against the vaunted Los Angeles Chargers defense in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs. On the defensive side of the ball, Josh Allen has put together another great season, ending the regular season with six sacks. Travon Walker, a defensive lineman who the Jags took first overall in the most recent NFL Draft will look to put pressure on the Chargers’ offensive front.

The Chargers come into this game with plenty of expectations. After going 10-7 this season, a record that would have won the AFC South, the Chargers finished second in the AFC West, relegating themselves to a wildcard spot. Head coach, Brandon Staley, who is now in his second season at the helm of the Chargers, has taken his unorthodox coaching style and landed his team in the postseason for the first time since being introduced as the Chargers’ coach on January 17, 2021.

The Chargers’ offense is considered one of the most explosive in the league. Quarterback Justin Herbert, along with Austin Ekeler (RB), Mike Williams (WR), Keenan Allen (WR), and Gerald Everett (TE) make up one of the most talented offensive units in the league. Herbert finished the season second in passing yards with 4,739 and had 25 touchdowns, good for eighth in the NFL.

The Chargers boast just as much firepower on defense, thanks to Joey Bosa, Khalil Mack, Derwin James, and Asante Samuel Jr. Bosa, who missed a large portion of the 2022 regular season, is back for the Chargers’ postseason run, which is bad news for the rest of the AFC playoff teams.

The Chargers travel from their home at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California to TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville to take on the AFC South Champion Jaguars in what has the potential to be a high-scoring affair. Tune in on Saturday, January 14 at to find out who moves on to the next round in their pursuit of the coveted Lombardi Trophy.
