Giants vs Vikings NFL Wild Card Game Analysis
The New York Giants (third place in a very strong NFC East) go to US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis to take on the Minnesota Vikings (winner of the NFC North) in a Wild Card matchup on January 15th. It is a replay of a game that took place on Christmas Eve. The Vikings won that game by kicking a 61-yard field goal as time expired. But the preceding 60 minutes were extremely competitive.
The Giants lost on Christmas Eve because they turned the ball over twice when they were in a position to score. Apart from this relatively strong showing, the Giants have struggled recently, winning only to a middling Washington Commanders and a very weak Indianapolis Colts.
Expect Plenty of Passing
You can expect to see plenty of passing if you tune in to this game. Minnesota’s offense is getting most of the press at the moment because Kirk Cousins and Justin Jefferson have emerged as one of the league’s most potent quarterback and wide receiver combinations.
On Sunday, the Giants will likely abandon their traditional run-oriented offense in favor of an all-out passing attack like they did on Christmas Eve. Minnesota has the NFL’s lowest-ranked pass defense, which explains why Daniel Jones threw the ball 42 times that night. All of that passing should open up holes for the running game, so expect to see Saquon Barkley have another big day.
Defense and Blitzes
Like all NFL games, the Wild Card matchup between the Vikings and Giants will be decided at the line of scrimmage. Both offenses will rely on their passing attacks, and both defenses will focus on disrupting pass plays by putting pressure on the quarterback.
These teams combined for seven sacks on Christmas Eve, and the Vikings were able to get to Jones with relative ease even when they did not blitz. Danielle Hunter racked up two of those sacks for the Vikings, so he will be a player to watch out for on Sunday.
