If you happen to be in Costa Rica during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, you are in for a treat. Football — or soccer, if you will — is a passion in Costa Rica, and the country is represented at the Cup by “La Sele,” as the national team is affectionately known, for a third consecutive time, which marks the sixth overall appearance. Each time the Cup is played, Costa Rica treats it as national party, especially when La Sele is involved.

There are several events planned to support La Sele during the tournament, and most of them involve watching not only La Sele matches but also all others because that is the level of football fervor in the country. Let’s review the options you have to watch not just La Sele and stars such as goalkeeper Keylor Navas and explosive forward Joel Campbell, but also all 64 matches of the Cup.

Over-the-Air (Free TV) Channels to Watch the 2023 Women’s World Cup

You can watch all 64 matches for free in Costa Rica thanks to the broadcasting rights granted by FIFA to Teletica, the most prominent broadcast television network in the country. To most Ticos, as the nice people of Costa Rica are called, Teletica is synonymous with channel 7, which broadcasts for free on an over-the-air (OTA) basis with nationwide coverage, but it is actually a free TV network that operates multiple channels. For the purpose of the Women’s World Cup, Teletica will broadcast on the following OTA channels:

* Teletica Channel 7
* Teletica Deportes (TD+)

The two channels above can be viewed for free with a digital antenna and a TV set that is compatible with a digital tuner, satellite receiver, or cable box. Both channels feature HD signals, but TD+ is not carried by all cable companies. Teletica also operates a streaming sports platform, which we will mention below, and a radio station that will also carry all 64 Cup matches.

Streaming FIFA 2023 in Costa Rica

The two main streaming options in Costa Rica, at least at the national level, are:

  • TDMAX
  • Liberty Go Móvil

TDMAX is essentially a digital version of TD+, which is operated by Teletica, and which is available through a mobile app plus a monthly subscription fee of $5. All 64 matches plus commentary and plenty of extras are included.

Liberty Go Móvil is part of a wireless data provider that used to do business as Movistar in Costa Rica. This streaming video service can be described as “cable TV on the go” because it carries not only all matches but also staples such as CNN, MTV, the History Channel, and many other channels.

You have to be a Liberty wireless subscriber or prepaid customer in order to install the Go Móvil app. Depending on the subscription plan you have, Liberty Go Móvil can run as low as $4 per month. If you are a prepaid Liberty customer, the monthly fee is $9, and you don’t have to use your existing data plan at all, which makes this option the best for lucky tourists who will be in Costa Rica during the Cup.

Streaming Devices for FIFA 2023 in Costa Rica

The two apps mentioned above can be installed on iPhones, iPads, and Android devices, which may include special versions for Chromecast, Roku, Firestick, AppleTV, and others. TDMAX also offers web access through modern browsers, but Liberty does not.

It is important to keep in mind that TDMAX requires a broadband internet connection. In the case of Liberty Go Móvil, wireless internet service is included for the app within Costa Rica. If you travel outside of the country, Liberty will still work, but you will have to connect to another provider, which you may need to pay for.
