How to Watch France vs Poland in Every Country

Game Analysis: France vs Poland

France cruised to the round of 16, securing advancement with a match to play, while Poland scraped into the knockout phase after finishing ahead of Mexico on goal difference.

As a result of their group stage performances and other factors, most believe that France will prevail in this round of 16 contest.

The French, who are under the tutelage of head coach Didier Deschamps and the leadership of captain Hugo Lloris (Tottenham Hotspur), scored six goals in their first two matches, half of those courtesy of Kylian Mbappe (Paris Saint-Germain).

The others were put home by Olivier Giroud (AC Milan), who had two, and Adrien Rabiot (Juventus). Les Bleus’ results were 4-1 and 2-1 wins over Australia and Denmark, respectively, and a 1-0 loss to Tunisia in a third match that did not stop France from topping the group.

The Poles, led by head coach Czeslaw Michniewicz and captain Robert Lewandowski (Barcelona), opened World Cup play with a 0-0 draw with Mexico and followed that up with a 2-0 win over Saudi Arabia.

Lewandowski and Piotr Zielinski (Napoli) teamed up for the lone scores of the latter contest. However, Argentina proved to be too much on the final match day, defeating the Bialo-Czerwoni, 2-0.

But four points were enough to secure second place, thanks to a 0 goal difference, better than Mexico’s four tallies and a -1 goal difference.

France and Poland have met 16 times. Five of those were competitive matchups with one coming in the 1982 World Cup’s third-place game.

Poland secured a 3-2 win, scoring three times in a seven-minute span surrounding halftime, in the 40th, 44th, and 46th minutes, to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 advantage.

They also met twice in qualifying for Euro 1968 – France took both of those – and twice in Euro 1996 qualifying – those matches were draws.

The French have had an impressive World Cup history, most notably winning the competition in its most recent iteration, in 2018, as well as in 1998.

It is one of only six countries to have claimed this trophy twice. France also made the final in 2006 and the semifinals before falling at that stage in 1958, 1982, and 1986.

Meanwhile, Poland is looking for its first appearance in the final. Its high-water mark entering 2022 has been third-place finishes in 1974 and 1982.

However, its history has not been as stellar as of late; this match with France will be its first in the knockout phase since 1986. Since then, it qualified for the group phase but did not advance from it in 2002, 2006, and 2018.

This match is an intriguing one. The French may be the favorites, but Poland will not back down easily.
