Tunisia vs France: The Teams

On paper, France is heavily favored to win the matchup between the two clubs, based on their much higher ranking and, of course, their performance in the 2018 World Cup tournament in Russia four years ago. Let’s take a closer look at the two squads.

Tunisia

  • Nickname: Eagles of Carthage
  • FIFA World Ranking: 30th
  • Manager: Jalel Kadri
  • Captain: Youssef Msakni
  • Key Player: Wahbi Khazri
  • Previous Appearances: Five
  • Qualifiers Record: 5-1-2

The Eagles of Carthage have only won two Group Stages matches in the history of the tournament and never advanced to the Round of 16, but Jalel Kadri, their manager, has stated that it is his personal goal to see to it that they place in the top two of group D this year, hinting that he may retire if they fail to achieve that mission.

Their key offensive threat, Wahbi Khazri, has scored 28 international goals over his career and will look to add to that total against France. In the second round of qualifiers, the team scored 11 goals in six goals while only allowing two by their opponents, although the competition was decidedly a bit weaker than it will be in the upcoming Group Stage.

As with many teams in the tournament, Tunisia’s defense can be questionable at times, although Mohamed Drãger has proven himself to be a top winger over his storied seven-year career. He also scored one of the team’s goals during qualifiers, making him an excellent wild card in this matchup against France.

France

  • Nickname: The Blues
  • FIFA World Ranking: 4th
  • Manager: Didier Deschamps
  • Captain: Hugo Lloris
  • Key Player: Karim Benzema
  • Previous Appearances: 15
  • Qualifiers Record: 5-0-3

The Blues will be a difficult opponent in this tournament, as they look to repeat as the reigning champions from the 2018 tournament in Russia. The team also won the UEFA Nations Cup just one year ago, proving they are still a force to be reckoned with. They have qualified for the tournament seven consecutive times, winning in 1998 and 2018, as well as finishing as the runner-up in 2006.

Their high-powered offense is centered around UEFA Player of the Year and 2022 Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema, who is widely considered to be one of the best strikers in the history of association football. The team netted an impressive 18 goals in eight matches during the qualifying portion and was undefeated in those contests.

The club’s main weakness is at midfield, with star defenders Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kanté unable to compete due to injury. That did not appear to be a major factor during qualifiers, however, as they allowed only three goals in eight contests on their way to winning Group D and securing their place in the Group Stage.

Prior Matches Between France and Tunisia

The two teams have never matched up in any previous FIFA tournament, although they have had a competitive game against one another. They faced off in the 1971 Mediterranian Games in Turkey, which saw Tunisia win 2-1. Since then, they’ve competed in four friendlies, the most recent of which was on October 14, 2008. France won the match by a score of 3-1.
