Netherlands at Qatar 2022
The Netherlands is currently ranked 8th in the world and is one of the favorites to win the World Cup in Qatar 2022 this fall. The team qualified for the tournament after winning Group G of the UEFA regional tournament earlier in the year.
The 2022 tournament represents the 11th time that the Netherlands has appeared at the World Cup. Its first appearance came in 1934 and resulted in an appearance in the knockout phase of the event. In 1938, the Netherlands would also advance to the first round of the knockout phase.
However, the Netherlands would not return to the event until 1974 when the country would finish as the runner-up. The Netherlands would also finish as the runner-up in the event in 1978 and 2010. In 2014, the nation would advance to the semifinal where it lost to Argentina on penalties.
In 2022, the Netherlands will start the tournament in a group alongside hosts Qatar, Ecuador and Senegal. The Dutch squad will likely be favored to win all three of its games during the group phase. Senegal looks as if it will be the toughest game for the Netherlands as it enters the tournament ranked 18th in the world. Ecuador is ranked 44th in the world while Qatar barely makes it inside of the top 50 entering group play.
