Team Poland Background
Poland is one of those countries that has a solid national team in that it regularly qualifies for major tournaments but does not experience much success at them. In fact, 1986 was the last time that the Poles played a knockout-phase match at a World Cup. That was at the end of an impressive stretch of results in which Poland finished third at the World Cup twice, in 1974 and 1982.
The Poles followed that latter bronze effort with a round of 16 showing at the 1986 event but has not reached the knockout phase since, exiting in the group stage in 2002, 2006, and 2018.
Meanwhile, Poland did participate in two knockout-phase rounds at Euro 2016 although the “win” in the round of 16 was actually a 1-1 draw with Switzerland that was decided by a penalty shootout. Another 1-1 draw and penalty shootout followed, this time with Portugal, but the Portuguese claimed that battle.
So, expectations at this year’s World Cup are relatively low. Adding to that feeling is how challenging of a group the Poles were placed in; it also includes Argentina, Mexico, and Saudi Arabia. In fact, star forward Robert Lewandowski, who spent much of his club career with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich before joining Barcelona this year, said himself that it is a “very tough” group.
