Sports This Week: MLB League Series!

New York Mets
Cropped from Rafael Montero by SLGC under CC BY 2.0.

The MLB League Series is just around the corner with the National League starting on Sunday and the American League on Monday.

As I write this, only one team has made it: my childhood favorite, New York Mets. (As a 5-year-old, I was very taken with the 1969 Miracle Mets!) They will face either the Dodgers or the Padres depending on who wins their next game on Friday.

In the American League, the first slot sees the Tigers leading the Guardians 2 games to 1. And the Yankees lead the Royals 2-1 as well.

Here is the schedule for the first two games for each League (EDT):

  • Sun Oct 13 : National League Championship Game 1 (FOX)
  • Mon Oct 14 : National League Championship Game 2 (FOX)
  • Mon Oct 14 : American League Championship Game 1 (TBS)
  • Tue Oct 15 : American League Championship Game 2 (TBS)

You can watch all four of these games for free with a Hulu + Live TV 3-day trial!

New This Week: Horror for Halloween Prep

American Horror Stories

It’s the month of Halloween, and I can’t think of a better way to get into the spooky spirit than by diving into two hauntingly good shows that are returning: American Horror Stories and Ghosts.

The second half of the third season of American Horror Stories is back with its signature collection of terrifying standalone episodes. I’m excited to see this season dive deeper into the macabre with its blend of familiar and fresh faces.

The twisted narratives, unsettling visuals, and dark atmosphere ensure that American Horror Stories remains a perfect choice for horror enthusiasts who are looking for a new scare each week starting Tuesday, October 15th on Hulu.

Ghosts - CBS comedy series

If you prefer ghost stories with a side of humor like me, CBS’s Ghosts is the perfect show for you to watch on October 17 (Thursday).

This sitcom follows Sam and Jay, who inherit an old mansion and decide to turn it into a bed and breakfast. The catch? The house is filled with spirits from various periods, all with wildly different personalities and unfinished business.

Season 4 promises more comedic chaos as Sam, the only living person who can see the ghosts, tries to balance running the inn while managing the antics of her spectral roommates.

Why Get Rid of Cable TV?

Some reasons for cutting the cable cord are obvious, but there are more benefits that may not have occurred to you.

  • Time: Too much television is a waste of time. If you cancel cable and only watch your favorite TV shows, you can spend more time with your friends and family.
  • Money: A cable or satellite subscription costs many times more than it does to grab a simple on-demand plan with Hulu and Netflix. Cable is also more expensive than online cable replacement services with live TV channels, like Fubo and Hulu + Live TV.
  • Technology: Video streaming is the future of TV. Soon, all video entertainment will be via an online connection. You might as well get on board now, learn the tricks, and save money in the process.
  • Information: Be more informed. Rather than be at the mercy of local news anchors, you will revert to more reputable news feeds like PBS, Bloomberg, CBS News, and LinkTV. For example, Fubo provides 13 news and information channels, along with all the local affiliates in its base plan.
  • Freedom: Cable and satellite providers normally tie you into a long contract, only to give you prices that are still higher than comparable streaming services. Getting rid of cable means getting rid of the contract. Go month-to-month and be flexible.
  • Dignity: Stop getting ripped off! Calling up the cable company and canceling your cable will simply make you feel good.

How to Choose Best Streaming Service For You

Choosing the right streaming service is probably the most important decision that a cord-cutter will make. There is no absolute “best” streaming service. It all depends on what you want with your live TV streaming plan.

Some streaming services are free, like Peacock TV (although they have a premium plan). Sling TV offers value plans that are low-cost but offer a lot. And the full-featured plans of Fubo, Hulu Live TV, and DIRECTV STREAM) provide what you would expect from a standard cable plan, but with different bonus features designed to appeal to all sorts of viewers’ needs.

Can I Get Internet Without Cable?

Sling TV Sports Android
Sling TV makes it easy to watch TV on your smartphone and other devices.

Most cable TV subscribers also get their internet access from the same place. In many cases, there are other options for the internet. In some cases, cable is literally the only game in town.

We’ve put together everything that cord-cutters need to know about getting internet service. Even if your cable provider is tied in with your internet, you can probably get a reasonably-priced internet-only plan via a downgrade.
