Kansas State Wildcats Football

Kansas State plays its home games at Bill Snyder Family Field, which has a capacity of roughly 50,000 people. The team is currently coached by Chris Kileman, who was hired by the team in 2019 to replace Bill Synder. Synder is considered to be the best coach in the team’s history and is widely credited for turning the program around.

Prior to Synder’s arrival in 1989, the team had appeared in a single bowl game, which was a 14-3 loss to Wisconsin in the 1983 Independence Bowl. Although the team would lose that game, it does have the distinction of being the first live college football game televised on ESPN.

In Synder’s first season, the team won a single game, but it represented the team’s first win in three seasons. In 1990, the team would win five games, which marked only the third time the team had done so since 1973.

Wildcats History

The team had won just 299 games prior to his arrival and would win 215 during his two tenures with the school. Kansas State would win the Big 12 in 2003, which was the school’s first conference title since 1934 when the conference was known as the Big Eight. The school’s other Big 12 conference titles came in 2012 and 2022.

Kansas State won its first bowl game in 1993 when the school beat Wyoming 52-17 in the Copper Bowl. Today, the Copper Bowl is now known as the Guaranteed Rate Bowl. The Wildcats would then appear in a bowl game every year through 2003, and the school has appeared in a total of 24 bowl games since 1993 and 25 overall. They have 11 victories in those games with a perfect 3-0 record in the Holiday Bowl and a 35-14 win against Syracuse in the 1997 Fiesta Bowl.

Players and Ranking

There have been a number of notable players who have played for Kansas State despite the fact that many were lightly recruited at the time.

During Bill Synder’s tenure, it was common for the team to recruit players from junior colleges in Kansas. This is how quarterback Micheal Bishop would become the starting quarterback at Kansas State in 1998 and how running back and returner Darren Sproles would join the team and be its breakout star in 2003.

During the 1998 season, the Wildcats would spend a week atop the polls and were considered favorites to win a national title. However, they lost in the 1998 title game to Texas A&M on a controversial touchdown call in overtime.

Kansas State Rivalries

Kansas State has a number of rivals including Kansas, Iowa State and Nebraska. Their series against Iowa State included two games at Arrowhead Stadium in 2009 and 2010 that were referred to as Farmageddon. The two schools still play each other but at their own stadiums.

In addition, the Wildcats games against Kansas are known as the Sunflower Showdown. The Wildcats last played Nebraska in 2010 when the school decided to leave the Big 12 for the Big 10.
