The Southeastern Conference (SEC) is arguably the best in all of college football. And the Tigers, who joined the conference in 2012, are one of the best teams in it — tying for second place last year.

However, their presence as one of the top teams in the nation stretches back to 1890. Let’s take a deeper dive into the program as well as how you can watch them play without a cable subscription.

Missouri Tigers games are primarily broadcast on channels that are traditionally found on cable packages. These channels include SEC Network, which is owned by ESPN. In addition, Tigers games are scheduled to be aired on ESPN, ABC, and ESPN+ during the 2024 season.

ABC is a traditional over-the-air TV channel, which means that you can watch without the need for a cable subscription. This also means that you can watch without the need to pay for a streaming service. As of June 2024, their game against Texas A&M on October 5 is the only one that might appear on ABC.

Missouri Tigers Football Overview

The Missouri Tigers have their home field at Faurot Field at Memorial Stadium, Columbia. The Tigers, who represent the University of Missouri, began playing football in 1890 as an independent before joining the Western Interstate University Football Association (WIUFA) in 1892. The school would revert to independent status in 1898 before joining the Big Eight in 1905.

Missouri remained in that conference until 1995 when it would become a member of the Big 12. Finally, in 2012, the school would make the move to the SEC where it remains today.

During its history, the school has won 15 conference titles with its most recent coming in 1969 when coach Dan Devine led the team to a 6-1 Big Eight record and a 9-2 record overall. Its first conference title came in 1892 and would be the first of three consecutive WIUFA championships.

Missouri has been credited with two national titles, but the school does not recognize either. The first came in 1960 when the school went 11-0 and the other was in 2007 when the school finished fourth in the final AP poll. Missouri would beat Navy 21-14 in the 1960 Orange Bowl and beat Arkansas 38-7 in the 2007 Cotton Bowl. LSU is recognized as the 2007 national champion while Minnesota and Mississippi are recognized as co-national champions in 1960.

Missouri would win the SEC East in both 2013 and 2014 but would go on to lose both conference championship games that they appeared in. The Tigers have appeared in bowl games for three straight years and defeated Ohio State in the 2024 Cotton Bowl for the team’s first bowl victory since 2014.

South Carolina and Arkansas are considered to be the team’s top rivals within the SEC, and Oklahoma was its top rival before moving to the SEC. However, the two teams will begin playing each other next year as Oklahoma will become the SEC’s newest member.

Missouri has produced two players who would eventually go on to be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. They are tight end Kellen Winslow who was enshrined in 1995 and cornerback Roger Wehrli who was inducted in 2007. There are a further 15 individuals who have been enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame including coaches Dan Devine and Gary Pinkel.

The Tigers football team has spent two weeks as the top-ranked team in the country with the most recent appearance on top occurring in 2007. In 2023, the team peaked at number nine in the College Football Playoff (CFP) rankings. However, it would get as high as number eight in the AP poll during that same year.

Missouri will see the return of Eliah Drinkwitz this year. With him are offensive coordinator Kirby Moore and defensive coordinator Corey Batoon, coming directly from South Alabama.

We’ll have more about the 2024 roster as the season gets closer.
