About the Premier League

Liverpool has been a part of the Premier League since its inaugural 1992-93 season, never finishing lower than eighth place.

This competition features 20 teams playing each other once at home and once away. These are organized over 38 matchdays from August to May.

It replaced the First Division. That became the country’s second-tier competition, later replaced by the now-named EFL Championship.

Premier League’s Worldwide Popularity

By most measures, the Premier League is the world’s most popular league. It is also where many stars, such as Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, play while in the prime of their careers. It is mostly an England-based league although a handful of Welsh clubs are eligible to be promoted into it.

Liverpool has won the Premier League once, in 2019-20, but the club does have 18 First Division championships that were secured prior to 1992.

Liverpool FC History

It has spent the majority of its history in England’s top league, only getting relegated on three occasions, in 1894-95, 1903-04, and 1953-54. It has been at that top level since the 1962-63 campaign.

In addition to their 19 league titles, the Reds have won the FA Cup on eight occasions and the EFL Cup nine times, including securing both of them during their 2021-22 campaign.

The club has also proved itself to be amongst Europe’s best on repeated occasions, claiming the UEFA Champions League six times, most recently in 2018-19. It also claimed the FIFA Club World Cup, later in 2019.

Liverpool Rivalries

Liverpool’s biggest rivalry, its local derby, is with Everton. In fact, Anfield and Everton’s Goodison Park, which is also in the city of Liverpool, are only separated by half a mile.

The Merseyside derby has been contested since 1894, and the teams enter the 2024 calendar year with 244 all-time meetings. Of those matchups, the Reds have claimed 99 titles while Everton was victorious on 68 occasions. The remaining 77 results were draws.

Liverpool Recent Results

The team’s 2022-23 campaign has had its ups and downs. Its most notable down has been its Premier League play as the team sits in ninth place in January, a placement that would be its worst Premier League finish in history should it remain in that position or move down to a lower one. However, it did advance to the UEFA Champions League knockout phase for the sixth straight season.

Some of its top players during the past few years have included Roberto Firmino, Alisson, and Jordan Henderson.
