The Lions are coming off of their best Premier League showing in nearly three decades and will be participating in the Champions League for the first time since playing in its predecessor, the European Cup, more than four decades ago.

How can you watch Villa play this season without cable? We’ll show you.

Where to Watch Aston Villa

As you may or may not know, broadcasting rights are divvied up in two primary ways, separated by country and by competition. In other words, an American wanting to watch Aston Villa play in the FA Cup will be viewing a different company’s stream than if it was a Premier League game while those in Australia looking to do the same will have their own broadcasting entities to navigate.

Watching in the USA

For Premier League play, NBC should be the focus for those based in the US. That’s because it oversees English- and Spanish-language broadcasts of Aston Villa’s matches in that competition. That said, Champions League play will surely be of strong importance to you as well, and NBC is not the destination for those contests. CBS and TelevisaUnivision handle them.

Streaming Aston Villa FC Online From Anywhere

Peacock Premium ($7.99/mo) provides streaming access to all of Aston Villa’s matches in the Premier League. FA Cup matches will be on ESPN+ ($10.99/mo). And UEFA Champions League matches are available through Paramount+ ($7.99/mo).

Many matches will be on live TV, which you will need a streaming service for:

Streaming Devices to Watch Aston Villa

Most of the streaming devices in use today are supported by all the streaming services above. Universally supported are the device sticks Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, and Roku. Android TV-based smart TVs and those from Roku and Samsung are supported. And so are Android and iOS mobile devices.

Other devices are also widely (but not universally) supported. These include LG and Vizio smart TVs and gaming systems like Xbox One and PlayStation.

Watching Aston Villa Elsewhere

Aston Villa has fans all over the world.

UK

As has been the case for decades, Sky Sports is usually the focus for Brits when they want to watch Aston Villa play Premier League matches. TNT Sports and Amazon Prime show Premier League games as well in addition to Champions League contests. But, if you’re new to watching this sport while in the UK, note that all 3 pm Saturday contests are blacked out.

Australia

Are you an Aston Villa fan Down Under? Make sure to garner access to Optus Sport as it’s the streamer of Premier League matches in Australia. But also ensure that you can watch Stan Sport’s livestreams as that’s where you’ll watch Aston Villa play Champions League games.

Aston Villa’s Competitions

As with all soccer clubs around the world, Aston Villa takes part in numerous competitions, and those aren’t only limited to the Premier League and Champions League although those are the club’s main focuses.

Premier League

The 20-team Premier League sits atop England’s soccer pyramid, and it’s where Aston Villa’s played since its 2019-20 campaign, after it had spent three years in the second-tier Championship.

UEFA Champions League

Aston Villa had never played in the UEFA Champions League until a fourth-place Premier League season in 2023-24 qualified it for that prestigious competition for the first time. That’s because its last appearance at that level of European soccer was the 1982-83 European Cup, the UCL’s predecessor.

The club’s also taken part in the UEFA Europa and Conference Leagues. Other potential competitions for AVFC in future years include the UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, and FIFA Intercontinental Cup.

Domestic Cups

Every Premier League team plays in the FA and EFL Cups, both of which are knockout competitions. The FA also operates the Community Shield, a summertime match featuring the previous season’s Premier League and FA Cup winners, but Aston Villa isn’t playing in that in 2024-25.

Aston Villa

Aston Villa’s one of the world’s most historic clubs, helped by club legend George Ramsay’s influence on the sport and AVFC’s role in soccer’s growing professionalism in its early days.

Ramsay, who many describe as soccer’s first manager or at least its first paid one, served in that role at this club from 1886-1926. That followed him having played for the team from 1876-82, until an injury put an early end to his playing career. In-between those stints, the club went professional, a process that included preparing to hire a professional manager.

During Ramsay’s time here, in 1897, the club started playing home matches at Aston Lower Grounds, which would later be renamed Villa Park and is still Aston Villa’s home.

Trophies

Although Aston Villa last played in Europe’s top competition in 1982-83, it actually won it in 1981-82 and is one of just six English clubs to have done so. A Super Cup win followed in 1982.

Domestically, the Villans have claimed England’s top league seven times, albeit not since 1980-81, before the Premier League came into existence more than a decade later. It has also won seven FA Cups, most recently in 1956-57, and five EFL Cups, the most recent of which was claimed in 1995-96.

2023-24

The highlight of Aston Villa’s 2023-24 campaign was it finishing in fourth place in the Premier League, not only its best top-flight result since its 1995-96 squad was fourth but also enough to secure one of the country’s four Champions League spots in 2024-25.

As far as European competition went in 2023-24 for AVFC, it advanced to the Europa Conference League semifinals before falling to eventual champion Olympiacos.

Its domestic cup showings were not the best, however, as the club exited the FA Cup in the fourth round and the EFL Cup in the third round although its focuses were stronger elsewhere that campaign.

2024-25

What will head coach Unai Emery and his side have in store for the club’s 2024-25 season? Only time will tell, of course, but hopes amongst supporters are high.

The main focuses include finishing in the Premier League’s top four once again in order to continue playing in the Champions League through at least one more season. That said, despite how glorious last year was in many ways, the club has still not claimed a major trophy in decades, since its 1995-96 squad won the EFL Cup, and changing that’s also a focus.

A couple of newcomers who are expected to contribute at a high level are left back Ian Maatsen and defensive midfielder Amadou Onana. Amongst the team’s top returners are goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and forward Ollie Watkins, the latter of whom scored 27 times in 2023-24 and was named the Premier League’s Playmaker of the Season, thanks to his 13 assists in that competition.
