British Open Background

The British Open is one of the four major championships of the PGA Tour — along with the Masters, PGA Championship, and US Open. Other popular golfing events include the TOUR Championship and the Ryder Cup.

The Open is the final match in the quest for a Grand Slam, although this is not possible this year since the first three tournaments were won by Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka, and Wyndham Clark. Only 5 men have accomplished this: Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, and Gene Sarazen.

This year, it takes place at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club at Hoylake in Merseyside, England. This is the first time it’s been played on this golf course since 2014.

The event takes place over four days with the first round on Thursday and the final round on Sunday. In total, 156 golfers compete although currently, 153 have qualified.

These are the golfers most likely to lift the Claret Jug:

  • Rory McIlroy (runner-up at 2023 US Open and winner the last time the event was held at the Royal Liverpool)
  • Jon Rahm (current Masters champion)
  • Scottie Scheffler (The Masters champion 2022)
  • Brooks Koepka (current PGA champion)
  • Cameron Smith (last year’s British Open champion at St Andrews).

Wrapping Up

The Open Championship, as it has for over 150 years, presents some of the best golf in the world. And you can watch it all on a budget with Sling TV.
