Described as “the pinnacle of the UAE racing season”, the Dubai World Cup is the last event of the Dubai Racing Club 2023/24 racing season at Meydan Racecourse and the final race of Dubai World Cup Night. While the World Cup is a thoroughbred horse race, the evening features six Group 1 and three Group 2 fixtures for a total of nine races – eight Thoroughbred contests and one Purebred Arabian contest.

The inaugural Dubai World Cup was in 1996 and has been held annually ever since (except for 2020 when the event was canceled due to the pandemic). It took place at the Nad Al Sheba Racecourse until 2009, but since 2010 has taken place at the Meydan Racecourse in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on the last Saturday in March.

In 2019, the prize money for winning the World Cup was raised to $12 million, to make it the world’s richest horse race. During 2017 and 2018, this title was held by the Pegasus World Cup. Across all nine races during Dubai World Cup Night, the entire event carries a total purse of $30.5 million.

While the grandstand can accommodate over 60,000 spectators, it’s much easier and cheaper to live stream all the action online. Keep reading to find out how with Sling TV.

This provides you with FS2 as well as FS1, Fox (if you’re within a local coverage zone), and many more – including ABC, NBC, USA, NFL Network, NBA TV, and MLB Network – making it perfect for sports fans.

Sling Blue lets you watch on up to three devices at once and comes with 50 hours of free DVR cloud storage. Read our full Sling TV review to see all the compatible devices you can use.

Sling Blue is also a great choice for horse racing fans as it includes NBC. This lets you watch the Triple Crown races – the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes – live as well.

FAQ

What is the Dubai World Cup?

The Dubai World Cup is a thoroughbred horse race held on the last Saturday of March at the Meydan Racecourse in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It’s a Group 1 flat race, meaning it’s the highest level of races, with a distance of 2,000 meters (around 10 furlongs). Entries are open to Thoroughbreds that are at least four years old from the Northern Hemisphere or at least three years old from the Southern Hemisphere.

Who won the Dubai World Cup in 2023?

Ushba Tesoro, a thoroughbred from Japan, won last year’s (2023) Dubai World Cup. Born in 2017, he was trained by Noboru Takagi and ridden by Japanese jockey Yuga Kawada in a time of :25. This was just a couple of seconds short of the event’s speed record set in 2018 by Thunder Snow – a thoroughbred from Europe, and the only horse to win the Dubai World Cup twice – with a time of .38. Prior to this, when the track was synthetic, African Story held the record with a time of .61.

Who are the contenders for the Dubai World Cup 2024?

The Dubai World Cup entrants won’t be officially declared until March 25th – just five days before race day. Recent winner of the Saudi Cup, Senor Buscador, has been shipped to Meydan though, and is expected to compete. Other horses predicted to cross that all-important finish line include:

  • Derma Sotogake
  • White Abarrio
  • National Treasure
  • Ushba Tesoro
  • Kabirkhan
  • Saudi Crown
  • Lemon Pop
  • Al Nefud
  • Senor Buscador
  • Dura Erede
  • Newgate
  • Bright Future
  • Luxembourg
  • Crown Pride

When and where is the Dubai World Cup held?

The Dubai World Cup event is held at the Meydan Racecourse, which is located in Dubai Meydan City, United Arab Emirates, not far from Jumeirah. Alongside two race tracks and the Grandstand, the site includes a world-class hotel, a racing museum, a nine-hole golf course, and 72 corporate suites.
