The Grand National is a huge event in the United Kingdom. But unlike the horse racing most popular in the United States, it is a steeplechase race. It is also notable for being a handicap race, meaning that horses are given varying amounts of weight.
The race also features older horses. To enter, they must be at least 7 years old. But winners are commonly much older. Peter Simple is the oldest to win at the age of 15 in 1853. But starting in 2012, three consecutive 11-year-olds won the Grand National: Neptune Collonges, Auroras Encore, and Pineau De Re.

Horse racing is a big deal in the United States with prominent coverage on major channels. But steeplechase races have never been as popular here (unlike the Triple Crown races – the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes) and we don’t know of any time in the past when the Grand National was shown on US television. It definitely wasn’t shown in 2023.
Interest in the Grand National is greatest in the United Kingdom. In 2025, it will be broadcast live on ITV and Racing TV. It is also available to stream with the ITVX app. In Ireland, it is on ITV1.
The event is on Foxtel in Australia. In Canada, it is available online from CBC Sports.

The Grand National takes place at Aintree Racecourse as it has since the race began. The venue is in Aintree, Merseyside, England — close to Liverpool.
