Week 10 Analysis: Los Angeles Chargers vs San Francisco 49ers
The NFC’s storied 49ers play host to the AFC’s LA-based franchise on Sunday Night Football in a matchup of second-place teams in the AFC West and NFC West.
What makes this NFL matchup especially interesting is that both currently hold the final wild card playoff spot in their respective conferences.
They also both still have division title hopes as the Chargers (5-3) are just behind the Chiefs (6-2) while the 49ers (4-4) trail the Seahawks (6-3).
LA is coming off of a dramatic 20-17 win in Atlanta, which was decided by the final kick of the ball. Cameron Dicker split the uprights after he had been team-less just a few days before.
The victory ensured that the Chargers would not have its second losing streak of the season. It helped rally the team heading into a challenging portion of its schedule, four away games in a the next five weeks.
The Chargers have also shown true grit repeatedly this season as that win was the team’s third after trailing by a double-digit margin after a quarter, becoming just the fifth NFL team to record that statistic.
Meanwhile, the 49ers have an interesting quirk in their schedule. They sandwiched a bye week between games against the two LA-based teams.
San Francisco has already defeated the Rams twice, 24-9 in week four and 31-14 in week eight. They are hoping for similar results against the Chargers.
The two quarterbacks are fairly well-matched. Justin Herbert, the Chargers quarterback since 2020, has 13 touchdowns and, five interceptions with a 90.6 rating.
After replacing Trey Lance after an injury, the Niners have Jimmy Garoppolo starting for them with 11 touchdowns, four interceptions, and coming in with a 100.7 rating on the year.
The 49ers are also hoping for the return of three previously injured players on Sunday as offensive lineman Colton McKivitz, running back Elijah Mitchell, and linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair are coming back to the practice field this week.
