The Philadelphia Phillies have struggled for much of their history. Despite having been in existence since 1883, the club has just two World Series championships.

The only other one to have been playing since at least 1901 with that number or fewer titles is the Cleveland Guardians, who played their first season in 1901 and also have two championships. Philadelphia only played in two postseasons before 1976, winning National League pennants in 1915 and 1950.

However, 1976 was the first of three straight playoff appearances. The Phillies finally broke through in 1980, defeating the Kansas City Royals in six games in the World Series. A total of 55 million people watched the final contest on television, still the most-watched Fall Classic game in history.

The club’s second World Series title occurred in 2008. Playoff series wins over the Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Dodgers were followed by a dominating five-game victory against the Tampa Bay Rays in the World Series.

Meanwhile, the team’s most recent National League pennant, its eighth, came in 2022. The Phillies finished the season with a record of 87-75 to make their postseason appearance since 2011. They beat the Cardinals, Braves, and the Padres on their way to the World Series. However, they lost the World Series to the Houston Astros 4-1.

Philadelphia made the postseason in 2023 with a 90-72 regular season record to finish second in the NL East Division standings.
