About Auburn Tigers Football Team
Auburn is considered to have one of the best football programs in the nation. Auburn is also competitive in basketball, softball, baseball, and golf. The Tigers won their first of five national titles in football in 1913.
Entering 2024, the Tigers have two claimed national titles, the most recent in 2010. This was their first undisputed championship and came in the same year that quarterback Cam Newton won the Heisman Trophy.
It’s worth noting that the trophy – given to the most outstanding college football player each year – was named after the man who coached the team from 1895 to 1899, John Heisman. He is still widely considered to be one of the greatest coaches in football history. Other noteworthy University of Auburn alumni include legendary professional baseball and football player Bo Jackson.
The Tigers also have four unclaimed national titles alongside eight SEC titles.
Where do the Auburn Tigers play?
The Auburn Tigers have participated in college athletics since 1892, and play in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) of NCAA Division I football. Their home games are played at the Jordan-Hare Stadium, on the Auburn University campus in Auburn, Alabama, and have been since 1939 (when it was called Auburn Stadium).
As the SEC consists of schools within South Central and Southeastern US, the Auburn Tigers may also play games elsewhere in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas.
Auburn Tigers’ 2024 Season
Although Hugh Freeze returns for his second season as Auburn’s head coach in 2024, he brought in new coordinators on both sides of the ball. DJ Durbin will be the new defensive coordinator while Derrick Nix will oversee the offensive side of the ball.
This was in response to a disappointing 6-7 finish last year, including a 31-10 loss at home to New Mexico State. The team ended the season with a three-game losing streak culminating with a 31-13 loss to Maryland in the Music City Bowl.
In 2024, the offense will revolve around running back Jarquez Hunter. Although freshman wide receiver Cam Coleman is one of the top recruits in his class, there are doubts as to whether quarterback Payton Thorne will be able to get him the ball efficiently.
Auburn will also need to overcome the loss of five defensive players to the NFL draft. The Tigers lost corners Nehemiah Pritchett and D.J James as well as defensive tackles Justin Rogers and Marcus Harris. According to Pro Football Focus, the Tigers are projected to win 6.7 games this year.
Their nonconference schedule includes games against Alabama A&M and California at home. Notable conference games include contests against their top rivals Georgia Bulldogs and Alabama Crimson Tide, which they meet in the Iron Bowl during the final week of the regular season.
