Auburn Tigers vs Maryland Terrapins
The 2023 Music City Bowl features the Auburn Tigers of the Southeastern Conference and the Maryland Terrapins of the Big Ten Conference.
The Tigers had a mediocre season as they have the last few years. They ended the season with a 6-6 record and only 3-5 in conference. This put them fifth in the West Division of the SEC — and only ninth overall. But they did seem to improve over the season and will likely dominate in this matchup.
The Terrapins are known for their outstanding women’s (and to a lesser extent men’s) basketball program. But they aren’t a football powerhouse. This year’s 7-5 (4-5 in-conference) result is fairly good (but also typical of the last three years). They ended the season in fourth in the East Division of the Big Ten — seventh overall.
Auburn Tigers Personnel
After doing an amazing job at Liberty, Hugh Freeze is in his first year as head coach of the Tigers. With him are offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery and defensive coordinator Ron Roberts.
Quarterback Payton Thorne leads the Tigers’ offense with running back Jarquez Hunter, wide receivers Ja’Varrius Johnson and Jay Fair, and tight end Rivaldo Fairweather.
On defense are linebackers Eugene Asante, Larry Nixon III, and Jalen McLeod, defensive backs DJ James, Kayin Lee, Keionte Scott, Jaylin Simpson, and Zion Puckett, and linemen Marcus Harris, Keldric Faulk, and Zykeivous Walker.
Maryland Terrapins Personnel
Head coach Mike Locksley is in his fifth season with the Terrapins and has turned the team around. With him are offensive coordinators Josh Gattis and Kevin Sumlin and defensive coordinator Brian Williams.
The Terrapins’ offense has been led this season by quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa. But he is moving on to the NFL draft and quarterbacks Cameron Edge and Billy Edwards Jr are expected to play. With them are running back Roman Hemby, wide receivers Jeshaun Jones, Tai Felton, and Kaden Prather, and tight end Preston Howard (Corey Dyches is transferring).
The Maryland defense features linebackers Beau Brade, Ruben Hyppolite II, Dante Trader Jr, Tarheeb Still, Fa’Najae Gotay, Caleb Wheatland, and Kellan Wyatt (Jaishawn Barham is transferring), defensive backs Ja’Quan Sheppard, Beau Brade, Dante Trader Jr, Glendon Miller, and Tarheeb Still, and linemen Jordan Phillips, Tre Colbert, Donnell Brown, Tommy Akingbesote, and Quashon Fuller.
