Who Is the Current Head Coach of the SMU Mustangs Football Team?

Rhett Lashlee is the current head coach of the SMU Mustangs football team. He’s 18-8 as he enters his third season with them in this position, having previously served as the Mustang’s head coach in 2022 and 2023. Lashlee had also worked with the team as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2018. In the 2023 season, Lashlee helped the team finish with an 11-3 record and AAC Championship win.

What Conference Is SMU Mustangs In?

As of 2024, the SMU Mustangs are in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). When the school first began playing football in 1915, the team was part of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA). SMU remained there until 1918 when they joined the Southwestern Conference (SWC).

The team has moved conferences a lot over the years:

  • TIAA (1915–1917)
  • SWC (1918–1995)
  • WAC (1996–2004)
  • Conference USA (2005–2012)
  • AAC (2013–2023)
  • ACC (2024-)

Why Did the Mustangs Leave the American Athletic Conference?

SMU had been searching for a larger conference to join since they asked the Big 12 for an invitation in 2011. The school believes that joining a power conference will allow it to earn more money, gain more exposure, and eventually become a nationally relevant program again.

In 2023, the ACC voted to expand its membership with California and Stanford following the two teams’ exit from the Pac-12 Conference. Following this, the ACC also agreed to add SMU. The three teams officially joined the ACC in Summer 2024.

History

During the Mustang’s time at the SWC between 1918 and 1995, they laid claim to three national titles. Their first came in 1935, while the other two came in 1981 and 1982. During the 1981 and 1982 seasons, the offense was known as the Pony Express, with star backs Craig James and Eric Dickerson leading the way.

By the end of the 1980s, the program’s fortunes took a hit when the NCAA gave SMU what is referred to as the “death penalty” in college football: the team was forbidden from playing in 1987 because of repeated rules violations. SMU had already been put on probation in 1985, after it was reported that boosters had been paying players in violation of NCAA rules.

This effectively ended SMU’s time as a national contender and haunted the school for decades. The team was shut out of the postseason from 1984 to 2009, when it won the Hawaii Bowl 45-10 over Nevada.

The Mustangs have made nine more bowl appearances from 2010, with appearances every season since 2019. They’ve won seven bowl games in the school’s history, the most recent being the 2012 Hawaii Bowl when they defeated Fresno State 43-10.

In addition to their three claimed national titles, SMU have won 12 conference titles. The most recent came in 2023 when they won the ACC, marking their first conference title since sharing the SWC win in 1984. They also played in the 2010 Conference USA title game but fell to UCF 17-7.

Rivalries

SMU has a long-standing rivalry with TCU Horned Frogs. The schools have played each other in all but seven seasons since 1915 and have played each other for the Iron Skillet trophy since 1946. TCU currently has this, thanks to the 2023 game, and leads the all-time series 53-42 with one tie.

The SMU-TCU rivalry is expected to end after 2025. TCU is aiming to play most of its non-conference games at home, so has decided not to schedule a match with SMU after next year’s college football season.

The Southern Methodist University has also had periodic rivalries against Navy, Rice, and North Texas that persisted as late as 2023. Those rivalries will likely be put on hold from 2024 though due to SMU’s move to the ACC.
