2024 USC Trojans Football Overview

University of Southern California (USC) has one of the most storied football programs in the nation. The program’s history dates to 1888, when the team took to the field for the first time. Since then, USC has claimed 11 national championships with its most recent undisputed title coming in 2003. Although the team did win the 2004 BCS title game, it was stripped of that championship by many selectors because of questions surrounding Reggie Bush and his eligibility

The Trojans have also won 39 conference championships, dating to its first in 1927 and most recently in 2017. USC was especially impressive in conference play in the 2000s, winning seven straight league titles from 2002-08.

In 2024, USC have taken their talents to the Big 10 from the Pac-12. USC fans were likely frustrated about how the team finished as the Trojans lost five of their final six regular season games. Their lone win during that stretch was a 50-49 victory over Cal.

Ultimately, the team would finish the year with a victory over Louisville in the Holiday Bowl. Head coach Lincoln Riley will need to bounce back this year without the services of Caleb Williams, the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner who was taken first overall by the Chicago Bears in this year’s NFL draft.

Miller Moss is likely going to be the team’s quarterback this year, and his performance in the Holiday Bowl should give the fanbase confidence. He threw for six touchdowns, which was a record for a USC quarterback in a bowl game.

“This team feels a little different than any of the teams that we’ve had right now at this point, so I’m excited about that.”

USC will have a number of significant games this year including home games against Penn State and Notre Dame. They will start the season with a neutral site game against LSU in Las Vegas and will travel to Michigan for a game against the Wolverines in late September.

USC will also take on its closest rival UCLA just before Thanksgiving at the Rose Bowl Stadium. The two schools are only 10 miles apart and spent many years both calling the Rose Bowl home. Stanford and Cal are also considered rivals of the school along with Notre Dame. In fact, USC fans refer to any day in which USC wins, Notre Dame loses and UCLA loses as a perfect day.

Memorial Coliseum: Home of Trojans

USC plays home games in one of sport’s most prestigious venues, the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, which most famously played host to the 1932 and 1984 Summer Olympics. The 93,607-capacity stadium, which is adjacent to campus, was built in 1923 and has been the home of the Trojans ever since.

Who are USC’s biggest rivals?

USC shares a fierce cross-city rivalry with the UCLA Bruins, who are just 15 miles away, as well as a cross-country one with Notre Dame. The former is more so based on geography while the latter features two of the sport’s most storied programs. Both of these rivalries are renewed every year.

Other Popular Sports Programs at USC

USC has one of the country’s best overall athletics departments as its 113 national championships rank third, only behind Stanford (136) and UCLA (123).

The school’s men’s track & field program leads the way as far as NCAA titles are concerned with 28 although the most recent one was claimed in 1976. Next on that list is the men’s tennis program, which has 21 trophies, including four in the previous decade, won in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2014. Meanwhile, USC’s baseball program has the most titles of any in the country with 12; its most recent was in 1998.

Of course, with all of that said, USC’s men’s basketball team receives a lot of interest despite having never won an NCAA championship thanks to how popular that sport is nationwide. The squad’s high water mark was reached in 1940 and 1954 when it played in the Final Four. However, much more recently, the 2020-21 Trojans team advanced to within a game of its third Final Four trip, falling in the Elite Eight.

USC Athletics’ women’s program has two sports with the most national titles at six each. First is water polo. But USC’s women’s beach volleyball team has been incredibly strong winning the title the last four straight years. Meanwhile, the Trojans women’s track & field, volleyball, and golf teams have three titles each, and its basketball and soccer programs have two apiece. This year, the women’s basketball team made the Elite Eight.
