Minnesota Vikings Week 3

The Sam Darnold era began with a 28-6 win over the Giants in New York. Darnold threw a touchdown pass to Justin Jefferson and Jalen Nailor while Aaron Jones added a rushing touchdown to go along with 109 yards from scrimmage.

Andrew Van Ginkel added an interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter of a game that wasn’t in doubt from the beginning. The Viking defense added another interception and five sacks to keep the Giants from doing much on offense all afternoon. Minnesota will host San Francisco next Sunday.

The Minnesota Vikings try to improve on their 2-0 record as they enter Week 3.

Out-of-Market Minnesota Vikings Games

Vikings fans in the north can largely watch live Sunday afternoon games on their local network affiliates. But fans located elsewhere will be limited to the games shown in those regions. Such fans need to accept seeing fewer games or learn how to watch out-of-market games.

There are a few options, which we discuss in NFL Out-of-Market Football Games. But the two standard approaches are to use NFL Sunday Ticket or combine a VPN with an existing streaming service.

About the Minnesota Vikings

Minnesota did well in the middle portion of its 2023 schedule, particularly during a five-game winning streak from mid-October to mid-November. However, three straight losses to start the season and four consecutive setbacks to end it proved to be its undoing as the Vikings finished 7-10.

Although the hope is for more consistent play in 2024, that may not happen for a few reasons, most notably because a new quarterback will be taking snaps and there are 38 newcomers on the roster. However, there is definite potential for greatness.

The starting quarterback is expected to be Sam Darnold, who played sparingly the past couple of seasons, starting six games for Carolina in 2022 and just one while with the 49ers a year ago.

However, the future and possibly the present at the quarterback position will be JJ McCarthy. He led the Michigan Wolverines to a 15-0 record and a national title in 2023. But even if he does receive significant playing time in 2024, he will most likely go through some growing pains.

All of that was necessary to counteract the loss of Kirk Cousins, who is now in Atlanta.

Head coach Kevin O’Connell is in his third season in that role. Among the rest of the team that he will have at his disposal, there are definite bright points.

Wide receiver Justin Jefferson was named the NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 2022 although he missed nearly half of last season with a lung injury. He is also one of the returners. As far as the newcomers go, running back Aaron Jones, most recently with Green Bay, is a strong addition.

One of the most important pieces of the defensive puzzle will be linebacker Ivan Pace Jr, who is also returning to Minnesota for an additional season in the Twin Cities. Meanwhile, safety Harrison Smith should provide some stable leadership in the secondary; he has played for the Vikings since 2012.

The Vikings are infamous in NFL history for being 0-4 in the Super Bowl, a record that is shared with the Buffalo Bills. However, the Vikings accomplished that feat over a period of seven years from 1969 to 1976. Minnesota has made eight playoff appearances in the last 20 seasons.

Fran Tarkenton is the team’s all-time leader in passing yards and passing touchdowns. Adrian Peterson is the team’s all-time leading rusher and will likely be inducted into the Hall of Fame when he becomes eligible to enter.

The team’s top rival is the Green Bay Packers while they also share divisional rivalries with the Lions and Bears. In addition, they have had short-term rivalries with the Saints, Rams, and Cowboys.

FAQs

What does skol mean?

The word “skol” is derived from the Swedish/Danish/Norwegian word “skål.” A “skål” is a shared beverage bowl. It has evolved over time to essentially mean “cheers.” It’s now primarily used as a jubilant cheer anytime the Vikings score, as well as during pre-game.

How many championships have the Minnesota Vikings won?

The Minnesota Vikings have won the conference title 4 times and appeared in the Super Bowl — all in the 1960s and 1970s and all lost. They have made the conference title 6 times, the last time in the 2017 season. They were last in the playoffs in the 2022-23 season where they lost in the Wild Card round.

Do Minnesota Vikings games sell out?

Some Minnesota Vikings games may sell out. The exact status varies from game to game. Regardless of sell-out status, local fans can always enjoy watching the Vikings on TV or other devices without facing blackouts. This is because the NFL no longer imposes its blackout rule (which prevented games from airing in the local market if they didn’t sell out). The rule was last implemented in 2014.

What radio stations are the Minnesota Vikings on?

The Vikings radio network has a significant reach, radiating outward from its flagship station KFAN (100.3 FM) in Minneapolis. The network is part of stations in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. TuneIn Premium provides online access to Vikings-oriented broadcasts as well. In addition, Westwood One Sports affiliates offer nationwide coverage of several Vikings games, including all postseason contests. And SiriusXM offers them all.

How do I watch the Minnesota Vikings on my phone?

You can watch the Minnesota Vikings on your phone in many ways. Most obviously, fans in the local area can watch with a subscription to NFL+. But all the live TV streaming services support Android and iOS smartphones. See the list above for more information.

How do I record Minnesota Vikings live games?

Most cable and satellite providers offer their subscribers the option to record games and shows to watch at a later time. This generally includes football games, but NFL Sunday Ticket subscribers should note that they will not be allowed to record contests shown through that service. Fubo and the other live TV streaming services offer the ability to record many football games. Additionally, consider that NFL+ provides archived broadcasts of all Vikings contests to subscribers.
