New England Patriots Week 3

The Patriots already have a quarter of the wins that they did a year ago when New England outlasted the Bengals in Cincinnati, 16-10, on Sunday. Running back Rhamondre Stevenson was one of the team’s shining lights that day, rushing for 120 yards and a touchdown.

That result, led by Bill Belichick’s successor in head coach, Jerod Mayo, pushed New England up four spots in the NFL Power Rankings, from 31st to 27th, tying for the most dramatic improvement from week 1 to 2 with the Saints (now 24th) and Buccaneers (16th).

Next up is the home opener against the Seahawks.

The England Patriots kick off Week 3 with a record of 1-1.

Out-of-Market New England Patriots Games

Patriots fans outside the team’s northeast area may have difficulty watching Sunday afternoons games with their local CBS and Fox affiliates. We have an NFL Out-of-Market Football Games guide that details all the alternative options these fans have.

While the most obvious option is to subscribe to NFL Sunday Ticket, this is only available through YouTube or YouTube TV so is an expensive option. It’s more economical to use a regular streaming service, such as Fubo, with a VPN to watch out-of-market NFL games. We recommend ExpressVPN for this.

About the New England Patriots

The Patriots have fallen from grace in recent years, considering they were one of the NFL’s powerhouse franchises for decades. It was initially a slow fall, as a Super Bowl-winning 2018 campaign was followed by 12-4, 7-9, 10-7, and 8-9 seasons, with the team appearing in the playoffs only in 2019 and 2021. This accelerated into a free fall when New England missed the postseason in 2022, followed by last year’s squad posting a 4-13 record, its worst in 31 years.

The 2024 campaign will be the team’s first without head coach Bill Belichick since 1999. He’s been replaced by Jerod Mayo, who was the Patriots’ inside linebackers coach from 2019-23 after playing as a linebacker for the franchise between 2008-15. This will be his inaugural NFL head-coaching role.

Another significant change for the Patriots was the trading away of quarterback Mac Jones, who did not play much during the second half of last season anyway.

Although Jones’ replacement for the end of 2023, Bailey Zappe, has returned for another season with the Patriots, it’s unlikely he’ll start again this year. There’s also Drake Maye, who was drafted third overall in the offseason, but he probably won’t play much right away. The team drafted Joe Milton, from Mayo’s alma matter of Tennessee, this year as well.

Despite this, Jacoby Brissett will probably be New England’s starting quarterback, at least at the start of the season, although he’s had a rocky career and is unlikely to be a long-term solution.

Regardless of who is taking the snaps, Brissett will be throwing to an unproven group of receivers, and the strength of the offensive line will be pivotal in giving that quarterback time to work through his passing options and helping the running game succeed. That line does have experience though, with four of its five starters returning.

Last season’s defensive unit finished seventh in the league in yards allowed per game and has nine starters returning, so this side of the ball should be solid. Plus, the team continues to possess a defense-focused head coach in Mayo, although some have pointed out that having a rookie head coach calling the shots, regardless of his background, may result in the defense’s quality of play dipping.

The franchise holds the record for most Super Bowl appearances and has more rings than any other team. They are tied with the Steelers for having the most Super Bowl wins (6) and with the Broncos for having the most losses (5). They also hold the league’s most bitter NFL rivalry with the New York Jets.

How many championships have the New England Patriots won?

The New England Patriots have won 39 championships since the franchise’s first season in 1960: 22 Divison championships, 11 AFC Conference championships, and six Super Bowl titles. These NFL championships came in 2001, 2003, 2004, 2014, 2016, and 2018.

When did the Patriots first join the NFL?

The Patriots were founded as the Boston Patriots in 1959. They were a chartered member of the American Football League (AFL) until they joined the NFL in 1970, as part of the AFC East Division. The franchise became the New England Patriots in 1971, following the team’s move to Foxborough. Their home games are still played in Foxborough, Massachusettes, at Gillette Stadium.

Where can I watch the Patriots 5th Quarter?

The Patriots “Fifth Quarter” is a post-game show that features live coverage from the team’s head coach, players, and post-game conferences following Patriots games. In 2024, it should air on WBZ-TV 4 or UPN 38 after every game. CBS also airs a Patriots 5th Quarter show following games broadcast on its network. It is available to stream through Fubo.

Even if fans can’t get tickets to a Pats game, there are still plenty of other ways to catch the action using a streaming service like Fubo, Hulu + Live TV, or DIRECTV STREAM, even for those out-of-market.
