Channels to Watch the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series

Fox Sports and NBC Sports share the broadcasting rights for the entire NASCAR Cup Series. Fox Sports covers the first half of the season with races airing on Fox affiliates as well as Fox Sports 1 (FS1). NBC Sports covers the second half of the season (including the playoffs). These races air on local NBC affiliates and USA Network.

History of NASCAR Cup Series

The NASCAR Cup Series is the highest level of racing in the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR). It originated in 1949 as the “Strictly Stock Division” and was known as the “Grand National Division” from 1950 to 1970.

NASCAR Cup Series Sponsorship

In 1971, the series started leasing its naming rights to the RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company and became the “NASCAR Winston Cup Series” through 2003. Nextel took over the sponsorship in 2003, renaming it the “NASCAR Nextel Cup Series” through 2007.

Sprint acquired Nextel in 2005, leading to the name change to the “NASCAR Sprint Cup Series” (2008–2016). Monster Energy took over sponsorship in 2017, resulting in the series being named the “Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series” (2017–2019).

However, Monster’s offer for an extension was declined by NASCAR in 2019, leading to the series being called the “NASCAR Cup Series” starting in 2020. The series now operates under a tiered sponsorship model, with Busch Beer, Coca-Cola, GEICO, and Xfinity as the Premier Partners.

Cup Series Race Tracks

While the NASCAR Cup Series has strong roots in the Southeastern United States, with approximately half of the races taking place in the region, the schedule now includes tracks from all around the United States. There have even been exhibition races held outside the United States, including in Japan, Australia, and Canada.

One of the most prestigious races in the NASCAR Cup Series is the Daytona 500, which garners huge television audiences. In 2019, it had over 9 million US viewers. In 2024, the viewership was down to only 6 million because it was rained out on Sunday and took place on Monday afternoon.

Cars of the NASCAR Cup Series

Cup Series cars are distinct in the world of automobile racing. They possess powerful engines capable of reaching speeds over 200 mph (320 km/h).

However, due to their weight and relatively simple aerodynamic packages (based on the body styles of cars available for purchase in the United States), these cars have poorer handling characteristics, which makes them particularly demanding of drivers.

How the Cup Series Championship Works

The NASCAR Cup Series Championship is determined by a points system. Drivers earn points based on their finish placements and stage performance during each race.

The season is divided into two segments, with the top 16 drivers, primarily selected based on wins, advancing to compete in the final ten races known as the NASCAR playoffs. This playoff format minimizes the points difference and increases competition.

Qualifying and practice races are usually broadcast a day before the main race. Generally, these will air on FS1 if it is a Fox/FS1 race or USA Network if it is an NBC/USA race.
