Mexico is scheduled to play November 22nd, 26th, and 30th. After that, we will have to see. But we’ll have all the details here!
Team Mexico Background
Mexico qualified for the 2022 World Cup by finishing second in CONCACAF qualifying. Although they had the same number of standings points as Canada, El Tri lost a tiebreaker based on goal differential. At the end of qualifying, Mexico had a goal differential of +9 while Canada had a goal differential of +16.
The Mexican national team will begin play in Qatar with a group stage game against Poland on November 22nd. Although Mexico will be favored in that game, Poland is considered to have an aggressive style of play, which causes problems for El Tri. After playing Poland, Mexico will have games against Argentina and Saudi Arabia.
It’s thought that the Mexican side will struggle against Argentina but have little problem with Saudi Arabia. Ultimately, they are predicted to finish second in their group, which would most likely mean a game against France in the first round of the knockout phase.
Although Mexico is considered to be a regional power, it has never gotten farther than the quarterfinals of a World Cup. The team’s last appearance in a quarterfinal occurred in 1986 during a tournament that was hosted in its home country. Mexico will be one of the hosts for the 2026 tournament alongside the United States and Canada.
The final squad will be announced by November 13th. Team manager Gerardo Martino has said he has a list of 31 people for the team that will need to be reduced to a 26-man squad.
Many familiar names are expected: Edson Alvarez (Ajax), Kevin Alvarez (Pachuca), Nestor Araujo (America), Andres Guardado (Real Betis), Hector Herrera (Houston Dynamo), Raul Jimenez (Wolves), Hirving Lozano (Napoli), Henry Martin (America), Cesar Montes (Monterrey), Hector Moreno (Monterrey), Rogelio Funes Mori (Monterrey), Carlos Rodriguez (Cruz Azul), Jorge Sanchez (Ajax), and goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa (America).
A couple of noted names will likely be excluded: Andres Guardado (Betis) and Javier Hernandez (LA Galaxy).
