Team USA Background

The United States men’s national team (USMNT) will be making a long-awaited return to the World Cup in November. This is because they stunned many by failing to qualify for this event four years ago. The final day of qualifying resulted in all of the wrong pieces coming together. One of those was a shocking 2-1 away loss to Trinidad and Tobago.

This time, the Americans essentially qualified with a match to spare, and there was no last-day drama this go around. The squad finished the final stage of qualifying, the only stage that it took part in after receiving a bye to that point, in third place out of eight with a 7-4-3 record and 25 points.

However, the team is limping into the World Cup. They had a pair of poor friendly results in its final two pre-World Cup friendlies, which were played in September. Those consisted of a 2-0 loss to Japan and a 0-0 draw with Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, its last competitive match was a 1-1 draw at El Salvador in a CONCACAF Nations League game that was played in June.

But teams do often know how to turn it on for a major event, so that may be what the US will do here. As the saying goes, that is why they play the games.

With that said, the Americans will have two matches against European teams in the group stage — England and Wales. This will go with one against an Asian side — Iran. It has little recent experience with teams from those continents.

European nations are rarely available for friendlies as the UEFA Nations League packs their schedules. The last time the USMNT played one was a 1-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina on December 18th. It took place in a non-FIFA window, meaning that clubs were not required to release players for it, and it did not involve those countries’ top players. Its last match with a European nation featuring top players was a 2-1 friendly loss at Switzerland on May 30, 2021.

The US has a little more recent experience with Asian teams, most notably those friendlies with Japan and Saudi Arabia. Also, the Americans defeated 2021 Gold Cup invitee Qatar, 1-0, in that competition’s semifinals.
