Manchester City is judged by many to be the world’s richest club, and it has a massive supporter base. The team is also very competitive on the pitch, regularly competing for Premier League and UEFA Champions League trophies. As a result, it enjoys considerable interest in watching its matches from fans, not only those in England but others situated far from there.

One of the current reasons for City’s massive popularity has been the play of forward Erling Haaland, who has dominated the Premier League, setting a competition record for goals scored in a season.

Outside the USA

Television and streaming rights for Manchester City games depend on the country you are in as well as the competition that the game is a part of. For example, a Canadian wanting to watch an EFL Cup match should utilize DAZN. An Aussie hoping to catch a Premier League contest should garner access to Optus Sport. And a Brit who cannot see the team play a UEFA Champions League game in person can watch it on BT Sport.

Premier League

The Premier League has been atop England’s soccer pyramid since its inaugural 1992-93 season. City has achieved considerable success in this competition, having won it six times, although its supporters do not enjoy looking up at the record-holder: Manchester United. The Red Devils have claimed it on 13 occasions.

However, City has been a dominant force in this competition as of late, winning it four times in a recent five-season span, in 2017-18, 2018-19, 2020-21, and 2021-22. Its other two titles were claimed in 2011-12 and 2013-14.

The Sky Blues also won England’s top league in 1936-37 and 1967-68, when it was the Football League First Division.

Here are all the 2024-25 Premier League teams:

Other Competitions

Manchester City also takes part in the FA and EFL Cups every season as well as a European competition in nearly every season, having partaken in the UEFA Champions League on an annual basis since 2011-12. Other possible competitions for City include the FA Community Shield, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup.

Perhaps surprisingly, the Sky Blues have never won the Champions League, coming closest in 2020-21, finishing as runners-up that campaign. Their only European title was a Cup Winners’ Cup championship in 1969-70.

Manchester City

Manchester City’s roots date to 1880, when St. Mark’s Church founded a soccer team that would evolve into the Sky Blues although it would not be until 1894 that it took on the moniker of Manchester City. This was done with the intent to attract fans from throughout the city and to represent it. Midway through that 14-year journey towards its current name, it changed its title to Ardwick AFC.

The team won its first major trophy in 1904, claiming the FA Cup on April 23 of that year. That was the result of a 1-0 win over Bolton Wanderers in the final. City would secure five more of those trophies to go with eight EFL Cup titles.

City of Manchester Stadium

This team’s home matches are played at City of Manchester Stadium, which is more commonly known as Etihad Stadium. It opened in 2002 to play host to the Commonwealth Games before Manchester City moved into it a year later. Its most significant non-City soccer event was the 2008 UEFA Cup final.

The team’s previous home ground was Maine Road, where the Sky blues played from 1923-2003. It no longer exists as it was demolished a year after City’s departure.

Rivals

Manchester United is City’s main rival. The teams are not only based in the same city but are situated just 4 miles apart. They have met nearly 200 times and regularly battle for Premier League and UEFA Champions League honors.

Perhaps they were most famously intertwined in separate matches that were played on the final day of the 2011-12 Premier League season. City needed a pair of goals in its game with Queens Park Rangers to finish ahead of United on goal difference and win its first league title since 1968, but it seemed unlikely as second half stoppage time started. However, scores by Edin Džeko and Sergio Agüero did just that and sparked mass delirium in the Etihad Stadium stands.

Manchester City also has a heated rivalry with Liverpool, which is more so the result of them repeatedly battling for Premier League titles over the past decade than any geographical element. In 2013-14, City won its second of those in three years, beating out second-place Liverpool by two points. They later finished 1-2 or 2-1 three times in a four-year span with City outpacing the Reds to the finish line in 2018-19 and 2021-22 and Liverpool securing the coveted trophy in 2019-20.

2024-25 Season and Players

Manchester City enters the 2024-25 campaign four consecutive first-place finishes in the Premier League. They have made the FA Cup final the last two years, winning 2022-23. It won the FA Community Shield this year after 4 straight years of losses.

It made the UEFA Champions League final two of the last four years — winning in 2022-23.

Man City has not done as well in the EFL Cup but did win four straight years from 2018 through 2021. Fans do not place high value on those competitions.

Of course, Erling Haaland is the face of the team. In fact, he is starting to become the face of the sport. With that said, one player does not make a team, and he is joined by several of the world’s greats, including midfielders Jack Grealish, Kevin De Bruyne, and Rodri, defender Nathan Aké, and goalkeeper Ederson.
