Newcastle United’s Competitions

Newcastle United, like nearly all soccer clubs throughout the world, takes part in multiple competitions. In its case, that includes a minimum of Premier League, FA Cup and EFL Cup fixtures.

Premier League

The 20-team top tier of English soccer is where Newcastle United plays its league fixtures and continues to do so as long as it avoids finishing in the bottom three spots in the table and getting relegated, which did happen in 2008-09 and 2015-16. Both times, however, the Magpies got promoted back up to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

However, Newcastle United was not a founding member of the Premier League as it was then enduring a four-year stay in England’s second tier, which ended in time for Newcastle to get promoted to and participate in the second Premier League season of 1993-94. The club has also spent previous periods of time in the second tier, but it has not been relegated to the third.

Newcastle United has never won the Premier League but did, on four occasions, claim First Division hardware; the First Division was the country’s top tier prior to the Premier League’s formation. Three of those titles came in the decade of the 1900s with the most recent taking place in 1926-27.

Domestic Cups

The FA Cup features all eligible clubs from at least the ninth tier of the English pyramid up with the 44 surviving non-Premier League sides joining the country’s elite teams in the 64-team third round. The Magpies have lifted this trophy six times, albeit not since its 1954-55 edition. In the years since, the team played in the final in 1974, 1998 and 1999.

The EFL Cup is a smaller competition that consists of the 92 teams in the country’s top four levels with Premier League clubs entering in the second and third rounds. Newcastle United has never won this cup but did finish second in 1975-76 and 2022-23.

European Competitions

Newcastle United regularly takes part in one or more European competitions, but this is not the case in 2024-25. In fact, the team is the top English side from the 2023-24 season to not qualify for Europe this campaign, which occurred after the club finished in seventh place in the Premier League table. Even eighth-place Manchester United did, doing so as a result of its FA Cup win.

The Magpies did participate in the Champions League as recently as 2023-24, however, although the club exited that competition in the group stage after finishing bottom of its group. Its biggest European success was winning the 1968-69 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, a predecessor of the Europa League. Its best European showing since then was a semifinal appearance at the 2003-04 UEFA Cup, the most recent Europa League predecessor.

Newcastle United History

Newcastle United was officially formed in 1892 although its origins can be traced to 1881 and to Stanley, Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End; the latter two entities merged in 1892 and included “United” in their new name to symbolize the uniting of them.

The Magpies have played at historic St James’ Park since that occurred.

Derbies

Although Newcastle United has two derby partners in Sunderland (Tyne-Wear derby) and Middlesbrough (Tyne-Tees derby), it will not face either in 2024-25 unless they are drawn together in one of the cups as the other two sides are in the second-tier Championship.

Newcastle 2023-24 Season

In the 2023-24 season, Newcastle United finished seventh in the Premier League and fourth in its Champions League group to go with quarterfinal appearances in the FA and EFL Cups.

Newcastle 2024-25 Season

The Magpies are under the tutelage of manager Eddie Howe, who has been in charge of the club since joining it partway through its 2021-22 season, making him the fifth-longest serving Premier League manager heading into the 2024-25 campaign.

Most prognosticators believe that Newcastle United will be in the mix for a spot in Europe — ie, finish in the top 10 of the league table but not challenge for the title.

As far as player personnel goes, midfielder Sandro Tonali is expected to be a significant contributor to the team’s successes while forward Alexander Isak will likely repeat as the club’s top goalscorer and might even top the Premier League in that statistical category. Defensively, center-back Lloyd Kelly will help provide stability and quality to the back line.
