The US Open (not to be confused with the tennis championship of the same name) is one of the four major golf tournaments, along with The Masters, PGA Championship, and British Open. Organized annually by the United States Golf Association (USGA) – the US governing body of golf – the US Open is a regular stop on the PGA Tour and European Tour.

One of the biggest mental and physical tests of golfing precision, accuracy, and sheer mettle, the US Open is infamous for being a championship where the par is relevant, and coming in even with par is considered a praiseworthy accomplishment.

USGA are sticklers for tradition and are practiced at turning old, grand American golf courses into a torturous trial for even the most seasoned pro. A significant portion of the amateurs of the field are fresh from national champion NCAA golf teams.

Where Is the 2024 US Open?

Last year (2023), the US Open was held on the North Course of Los Angeles Country Club in Los Angeles, California, and was won by Wyndham Clark, the first time he’d won a major championship. Rory McIlroy came runner-up. This year, the 124th U.S. Open will take place on course no. 2 at the Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

The schedule for TV coverage is a little complicated because it’s split across an over-the-air network, a pay channel, and a streaming service. Read on to find out where you can find the US Open, and how you can save money watching it with Sling.

How To Watch the US Open With Sling TV

The two main channels broadcasting the championship are NBC and USA. Sling Blue, a base package for $40.00/month, includes both channels throughout most of the US.

Because NBC is a local channel, covered by affiliate stations throughout the country, you need to be within one of these areas to receive it. Here are the markets Sling Blue can provide NBC to:

  • Boston (WBTS)
  • Chicago (WMAQ)
  • Dallas (KXAS)
  • Hartford (WVIT)
  • Los Angeles (KNBC)
  • Miami (WTVJ)
  • New York (WNBC)
  • Philadelphia (WCAU)
  • San Diego (KNSD)
  • San Francisco (KNTV)
  • Washington (WRC)

If you’re not in one of those locations, consider installing an antenna instead. These offer full HD signals for most local stations (ABC, CBS, NBC, etc.) which are free across the vast majority of the country. Sling TV will even provide a free antenna if you prepay two months for one of its plans.

Do I Need Any Other Services?

Some of the US Open’s Thursday and Friday coverage will stream on Peacock (NBCUniversal’s streaming service). This means you’ll also need Peacock if you want to watch every moment of the championship, even if you only grab the 7-day free trial.

If you’re only concerned with watching the weekend coverage, you can make do with just Sling Blue, as the Saturday and Sunday broadcasts will be on NBC and USA Network.

Golf fans may want to consider Peacock, as it also airs exclusive coverage of other golf tournaments – most notably the U.S. Women’s Open.

Why not just get Peacock?

While you could just get Peacock, you wouldn’t get the primary coverage from USA and NBC over the weekend. NBC Sports has purposely set up Peacock as a supplement to the main channels, so though it does provide some great features and exclusive live coverage, NBC and USA cover the major parts of the tournament.

Do I Need the Golf Channel?

While the main event will air on NBC and USA, the Golf Channel will broadcast on-site news and highlights leading up to the US Open, from Monday, June 10th. This will continue live from Thursday, June 13th, to Sunday, June 16th, airing before and after the main coverage on NBC, USA, and Peacock.

The Golf Channel is available through Sling as part of its Blue Sports Extra add-on package, for $11/mo. This also provides beIN Sports, MLB Network, MLB Network Strike Zone, NBA TV, NHL Network, NFL RedZone, Big Ten Network, FS2, and the Tennis Channel.

FAQs

What is “golf’s longest day”?

“Golf’s longest day” is the annual, one-day, final qualifying round for the US Open. It’s played over 17 hours through 36 holes at 13 sites around the world. Anyone of any age, man or woman, with a handicap over 1.4 may attempt to qualify (hence the “open” part of the name). Ties are decided with playoffs (which can make the day even longer.)

This year, the Longest Day will be June 3, with nine US sites holding 36-hole qualifying simultaneously.

When was the first US Open?

The USGA held the first US Open in 1895, the day after the first US Amateur golf championship, with both played at Newport Golf Club in Newport, Rhode Island. The US Open was won by two strokes by English golfer Horace Rawlins. Brits and Scots took the trophy every year until 1911 when John J. McDermott became the first American to win it.

What are some US Open records?

Tiger Woods won by 15 strokes in 2000, which remains the record for all four Major championships. Rory McIlroy holds the record for lowest score, 268 in 2011, which also broke the record to par at -16. Brooks Koepka tied the 16 under par in 2017.

What is the 2024 USGA Championship schedule?

  • Jan 18-21: Latin America Amateur
  • May 11-15: U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball
  • May 25-29: U.S. Amateur Four-Ball

  • Sep 21-26: U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur

Why does the name Francis Ouimet sound familiar?

Possibly because his US Open triumph was the subject of the 2005 film The Greatest Game Ever Played. The movie was directed by Bill Paxton and stars Shia LaBeouf as Ouimet and Stephen Dillane (Stannis Baratheon on Game of Thrones) as Harry Vardon, his chief rival. It’s currently streaming on Disney+ if you’re interested.
