Maryland Terrapins Basketball: Present and Past
The Terrapins started their basketball program in 1904. From 1953, they were part of the ACC but they moved to the Big Ten Conference in 2014. Maryland plays its home basketball games for both the men’s and women’s teams at the Xfinity Center on the campus of the University of Maryland, College Park.
The men’s basketball team is one of the strongest in the NCAA. They’ve made the NCAA Tournament 13 times since 2000. This includes their championship in 2002. They’ve won one Big Ten Conference regular season championship (2020). Heading into March Madness, they are toward the bottom of the AP Top 25 Coaches Poll rankings despite their road woes with a 2-9 record for the regular season.
Last year, the Terrapins didn’t make it into the NCAA tournament. The year before, they were eliminated in the second round.
Kevin Willard took over as permanent head coach after Mark Turgeon retired after 11 seasons with the Terrapins. The 2022-23 squad is led by Jahmir Young (total points, assists, and steals leader) and Julian Reese (rebounds). Rounding out the square are Don Carey, Patrick Emilien, Hakim Hart, Jahari Long, Ian Martinez, and Donta Scott.
As strong as the men’s team is, Maryland’s women’s basketball team is even stronger. They’ve made the NCAA tournament 18 times this millennium. That includes three Final Four appearances and a championship in 2006. They are currently ranked somewhere around #5 in the nation.
Head coach Brenda Frese is in her 21st season with the Terrapins. During that time, her record is 559–144 (80%) but since 2014, when the college moved to the Big Ten, her record is and incredible 252–43 (85%)! This includes 6 Big Ten Conference regular season championships.
The team features total points, rebounds, and steals leader Diamond Miller along with Brinae Alexander, Lavender Briggs, Faith Masonius, Bri McDaniel, Abby Meyers, Elisa Pinzan, and Shyanne Sellers (assist leader).
