What Channels Will Maryland’s Basketball Team Appear On?

The Maryland Terrapins have been part of the Big Ten Conference since 2014. Because of this, roughly half of their games air on Big Ten Network (BTN). Most of the rest appear on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNews, and FS1.

A handful of their early games air on B1G+ — The Big Ten’s streaming-only platform that must be purchased separately.

If the Terrapins make it to the postseason, you will also want CBS, TBS, TNT, and truTV.

Other Maryland Sports

Maryland has wide-ranging athletics programs beyond the men’s basketball program.

Women’s Basketball

Maryland’s women’s basketball team appears most frequently on BTN and BIG+, and a few of their more important games are showcased on ESPN and ESPN2.

The team has reached the Big 10 conference tournament final every year that it has been a member of the conference. And it has won the tournament five times.

Should the Terrapins make it to the postseason (and they usually do), you will find these March Madness games on the ESPN channels.

The Maryland Terrapins play their football games at Maryland Stadium, which can hold over 54,000 fans. The school is currently coached by Mike Locksley and has won 11 bowl games in program history. It has ongoing rivalries with PSU, West Virginia, and Virginia.

Maryland football games air mostly on BTN, ESPN, and Fox (including sister stations).

More Varsity Sports

In addition to college football and basketball, the University of Maryland sponsors a number of other varsity sports including field hockey, soccer, and volleyball. Softball, wrestling, and lacrosse are other examples of sports that the school sponsors at the varsity level.

You can see these other sports on BTN, B1G+, ESPN+, and elsewhere.

Maryland Terrapins Basketball: Present and Past

The Terrapins started their basketball program in 1904. From 1953, they were part of the ACC but they moved to the Big Ten Conference in 2014. Maryland plays its home basketball games for both the men’s and women’s teams at the Xfinity Center on the campus of the University of Maryland, College Park.

The men’s basketball team is one of the strongest in the NCAA. They’ve made the NCAA Tournament 13 times since 2000. This includes their championship in 2002. They’ve won one Big Ten Conference regular season championship (2020). Heading into March Madness, they are toward the bottom of the AP Top 25 Coaches Poll rankings despite their road woes with a 2-9 record for the regular season.

Last year, the Terrapins didn’t make it into the NCAA tournament. The year before, they were eliminated in the second round.

Kevin Willard took over as permanent head coach after Mark Turgeon retired after 11 seasons with the Terrapins. The 2022-23 squad is led by Jahmir Young (total points, assists, and steals leader) and Julian Reese (rebounds). Rounding out the square are Don Carey, Patrick Emilien, Hakim Hart, Jahari Long, Ian Martinez, and Donta Scott.

As strong as the men’s team is, Maryland’s women’s basketball team is even stronger. They’ve made the NCAA tournament 18 times this millennium. That includes three Final Four appearances and a championship in 2006. They are currently ranked somewhere around #5 in the nation.

Head coach Brenda Frese is in her 21st season with the Terrapins. During that time, her record is 559–144 (80%) but since 2014, when the college moved to the Big Ten, her record is and incredible 252–43 (85%)! This includes 6 Big Ten Conference regular season championships.

The team features total points, rebounds, and steals leader Diamond Miller along with Brinae Alexander, Lavender Briggs, Faith Masonius, Bri McDaniel, Abby Meyers, Elisa Pinzan, and Shyanne Sellers (assist leader).
