South Carolina Gamecocks Basketball
The University of South Carolina has fielded a men’s varsity basketball team since the 1908-1909 season when the school only played three games. The Gamecocks had an irregular game schedule during the initial years of their existence when the university was not affiliated with any conference.
The program gained stability when the school joined the old southern conference in the early 1920s. Through the years, the University of South Carolina played in various leagues, including the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and Metro Conference, before joining the SEC in 1991-92.
Women’s Gamecocks basketball has a much shorter history. Before Title IX, opportunities for women in college sports were rare. The University of South Carolina first fielded a women’s varsity team in 1974, but women had played basketball in various forms since 1922 when a group of students decided to learn the sport.
The first women’s team was called the Pullets, which means young hens, playing off the Gamecocks nickname used for other sports. South Carolina women began to play intra-school teams in 1936 and continued through the 1960s.
A women’s basketball club team was formed in 1967. The team changed its name to the Carolina Chicks in 1970, playing games in the Intercollegiate Association for Women Athletics (IAWA). Pam Backhaus became the team’s first head coach in 1974.
South Carolina changed the women’s team’s name to the Lady Gamecocks in 1977 ad finally joined the NCAA in 1983, joining the men’s team in the Metro Conference. Clemson University is the biggest rival for both teams.
Today, both teams play at the 18,000-seat Colonial Life Arena on the main University of South Carolina campus in Columbia.
South Carolina Gamecocks Men’s Basketball
The men’s team has achieved considerable success on the conference level, winning regular season championships in the southern Conference in 1927, 1933, 1934, and 1945.
The Gamecocks achieved their most consistent success under Hall of Fame Coach Frank McGuire, who led the team from 1964 through 1980. During his tenure, South Carolina had an undefeated ACC season in 1970 and won the ACC tournament in 1971.
The Gamecocks have had spotty success at the NCAA tournament. They last reached the NCAA tournament in 2017, appearing for the first time since 2004. The Gamecocks reached the Final Four in 2017, upsetting the Duke Blue Devils and the Baylor Bears along the way.
Current top players are Gregory Jackson III, Meechie Johnson, Hayden Brown, Chico Carter Jr, and Jacobi Wright.
