Watching Tennessee Volunteers Basketball Live: TV Channels and Streaming Services

Generally, the channels that you need to watch Tennessee men’s and women’s basketball broadcasts are in the ESPN family of networks, most notably the SEC Network, but also important are ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU. Note that ABC is generally not included in this group and that several contests are only available online through SEC Network+. The latter is the case more often for the women.

Also, CBS is a possibility for men’s games. During the 2022-23 SEC season, that network broadcast six games with one of those a UT contest, the road matchup with rival Kentucky on February 18.

Away-from-Knoxville non-conference games may be shown through other entities. In 2022-23, this included a men’s game with Maryland in Brooklyn, NY, on December 11, which was on FS1. It also included women’s contests on ABC (at Stanford on December 18) and the Big Ten Network (at Ohio State on November 8). In addition, a pair of contests at the Women’s Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas were only available through FloHoops.

The Legacy and History of Tennessee Volunteers Basketball

Tennessee basketball dates to the first decade of the 20th century. The Lady Vols got it started, playing for the initial time on March 13, 1903, while their male counterparts got going on their intercollegiate basketball journey on January 22, 1909. However, the men’s team continued to play regularly in the decades that followed while the women’s squad only competed sporadically until its 1969 campaign.

UT basketball teams play at Thompson-Boling Arena. It used to have a capacity of 24,535, from its opening in 1987 until its renovation in 2007, which lowered that to 21,678. The crowd of 24,653 to watch a Lady Vols showdown with UConn on January 7, 2006, is still the largest attendance for an on-campus women’s basketball game played anywhere.

The Vols and Lady Vols have several rivals, the most prominent of which are in-state opponent Vanderbilt and interstate rival Kentucky. Otherwise, Memphis is an additional rival on the men’s side while the Tennessee-UConn women’s basketball rivalry is the most historic one in that sport.

Tennessee Volunteers Men’s Basketball: Team Insights and Analysis

The high-water mark for Tennessee’s men’s basketball program was hit in 2010 with an Elite Eight appearance. The Vols also reached the Sweet 16 on eight other occasions, in 1967, 1981, 2000, 2007, 2008, 2014, 2019, and 2023.

UT entered its 2023-24 campaign with five straight NCAA Tournament appearances and is hoping to get back to the Sweet 16 and possibly further.

Head coach Rick Barnes leads the Vols this season — it is his 9th. The main squad consists of Josiah-Jordan James, Santiago Vescovi, Jahmai Mashack, Jonas Aidoo (blocked shots, rebounds leader), Zakai Zeigler (assists, steals leader), Jordan Gainey, and Dalton Knecht (points leader). Freddie Dilione has been out much of the season.

Tennessee Volunteers Women’s Basketball: Team Insights and Analysis

The Lady Vols have the second-largest national championship trophy collection in the sport with eight, a total that only trails UConn’s 11. They were claimed in 1987, 1989, 1991, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2007, and 2008. However, times have gotten tougher, relatively speaking, since then as UT has not been to a Women’s Final Four since that most recent title was won.

With that said, the Lady Vols have remained “elite” as Elite Eight appearances followed in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2016. Meanwhile, the 2021-22 squad finished its season with a Sweet 16 run.

Those looking to bring this team towards the March Madness success that it accomplished in years past include Jewel Spear (points leader), Karoline Striplin, Kaiya Wynn, Sara Puckett (rebounds leader), Tess Darby, Jasmine Powell (assists, steals leader), Tamari Key (blocked shots leader), and Jillian Hollingshead. Power forward Rickea Jackson is widely regarded as a possible No. 3 overall pick for the WNBA draft.

FAQs

Which radio stations carry Tennessee basketball?

Tennessee’s Vol and Lady Vol Networks are amongst the most extensive in college sports. In particular, the Lady Vol Network stands out in that sport, both in its extensiveness and its history. The radio network for men’s games consists of 55 stations while women’s broadcasts are aired on 21 outlets. All are based in the Volunteer State except for four Alabama-based stations in the men’s network.

Fans in Knoxville should tune into 99.1 The Sports Animal or 107.7 WIVK.

Who are Tennessee’s biggest rivals?

Tennessee Volunteers’ biggest rivals are Vanderbilt and Kentucky. They all play each other twice every regular season except for the UT-UK women’s rivalry, which is only scheduled to be renewed once every campaign. The men’s program also has rivalries with Memphis and Auburn, the latter because of AU’s head coach Bruce Pearl having previously coached UT. The Lady Vols have a heated rivalry with UConn; they played in the national championship game four times.
