Oklahoma vs Florida State
With the resurgent Florida State Seminoles and the high-flying Oklahoma Sooners set to square off in Orlando, the 2022 Cheez-It Bowl promises to deliver plenty of fireworks. The Sooners and Seminoles come into bowl season trending in very different directions, so how do these heavyweight programs measure up?
Tale of the Tape
Despite the loss of ascendent head coach Lincoln Riley, Oklahoma entered the season ranked inside the top 10. After a strong start under new hire Brent Venables, however, the Sooners capped off a string of tough losses with a humiliating 49-0 shellacking at the hands of rival Texas. Tailback Eric Gray and UCF quarterback transfer Dillon Gabriel combined to spark a potent offensive attack for the Sooners, but Oklahoma ultimately stumbled to a 6-6 finish behind one of the most porous defenses in the country.
The first half of the season was no less tumultuous for Florida State, as Mike Norvell’s squad followed a sizzling start with heartbreaking losses to a trio of ranked conference opponents. Nonetheless, the Seminoles closed the year on a tear, racking up five straight wins and climbing to 13th in the rankings. The ‘Noles displayed impressive talent on both sides of the ball, finishing inside the top 15 in both total offense and total defense.
Players To Watch
With star running back Eric Gray opting to skip the Cheez-It Bowl, the pressure will be on quarterback Dillon Gabriel to carry an even larger load for the Oklahoma offense. Defensively, linebacker duo Danny Stutsman and DaShaun White must come up big to keep the multifaceted Seminoles attack contained.
For Florida State, it all comes down to star quarterback Jordan Travis and his ability to make plays inside and outside of the pocket. On defense, budding superstar Jared Verse will undoubtedly be looking to rack up the sacks against an Oklahoma offensive line featuring a pair of backup tackles.
What To Expect
Though Oklahoma’s dangerous offense can’t be discounted, the absence of Eric Gray may prove too big a hurdle to overcome. The Sooners have also struggled to contain mobile quarterbacks throughout the season, setting the stage for a huge day from Jordan Travis and company.
There should be points aplenty in Camping World Stadium, but the Seminoles look poised to close out the year with a victory.
