North Texas and Boise State

The 2022 Frisco Bowl features two teams that come into the game hoping to give their fans something to cheer about. North Texas University and Boise State University gave fans plenty to be happy about during the regular season, but both teams then went on to suffer crushing losses in conference championship games.

North Texas won three of its last four regular season games before getting blown out by UTSA in the Conference USA Championship Game. Boise State was beaten 28-16 by Fresno State in the Mountain West Championship Game after ending the season with a 9-4 record.

That C-USA Championship loss prompted University of North Texas officials to fire head coach Seth Littrell. A losing record after seven seasons at the helm and five consecutive bowl game losses sealed Littrell’s fate. Stepping in for Littrell will be former defensive coordinator Phil Bennett.

This is something Mean Green fans should be happy about because Bennett has thrived in just this kind of situation in the past. When University of Pittsburgh head coach Dave Wannstedt resigned abruptly in December 2010, Bennett stepped in to lead the Panthers to victory in the BBVA Compass Bowl.

Bennett will be relying on quarterback Austin Aune and wide receiver Jyaire Shorter to put points on the board when the Frisco Bowl kicks off on December 17. Aune is already fourth on North Texas University’s all-time passer list and has another full year to play, and Shorter has put up incredible numbers after missing 11 games through injury in 2021. The Frisco Bowl will be the sixth bowl game in the last seven years for North Texas.

Prowling the sidelines for Boise State will be second-year head coach Andy Alvos. A former Broncos linebacker who once returned an interception 92 yards to score a touchdown in the Liberty Bowl, Alvos has hit the ground running as his alma meta’s head coach. He has posted a 16-8 record in two seasons, and he was named the 2022 Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year.

When the game gets going, Broncos fans will be putting their faith in Mountain West Freshman of the Year Taylen Green. The quarterback ranks fourth among elite freshman passers in touchdowns, and he ranks fifth in both total passing yards and passing yards per game.

The Frisco Bowl will be the seventh meeting between North Texas and Boise State. The two teams last faced each other in 2000, and the all-time series is currently tied at three wins each.
