Iowa vs Kentucky
The Music City Bowl features two 7-5 teams in Kentucky and Iowa that have had very different paths to the post-season. Kentucky started the year at No 18 in the standings and were ranked as high as No 8 at one point in the season. Iowa, on the other hand, started the year barely beating San Diego State and then losing to an Iowa State team that most believed they would beat.
Kentucky comes in to the Music City Bowl as the favorite and with good reason. First of all, they played in the vaunted SEC where they had a very up-and-down year. They lost to “cellar-dweller” Vanderbilt for the first time in years, but they played Georgia close and beat Mississippi State.
The team features a future NFL signal-caller in Will Levis who is a drop-back passer that can also take off and gain some yards on the ground. RB Chris Rodriguez is a two-time all-SEC player who is also the Wildcat’s best player. Their two starting linebackers, Jacquez Jones and DeAndre Square, lead a defense that has gotten a reputation under HC Mark Stoops for being hard-hitting and blue-collared and that tradition continues.
Iowa, on the other hand, enters the game with probably 8 of their best 10 players on the defensive side of the ball. The Hawkeyes averaged less than 18 points per game in 2022 and is maybe the worst offense in a major bowl game this year. They scored more than 30 points exactly one time this year against a Northwestern team that gave up a lot all year.
QB Spencer Petras threw the same number of touchdowns as interceptions, and their run game is not exactly feared either. To make matters worse, Petras will not be playing due to injury and their QB is yet to be determined.
Iowa’s defense, on the other hand, comes to play every single week. Their linebackers, Jack Campbell and Seth Benson, lead the team but there is talent across the board.
If you are a fan of defense, this may be the best bowl game of the year, and is likely to be very low scoring. Kentucky is the favorite, and if Levis plays will have a big advantage. If he does not, and it is expected that he will not, the game is a toss-up.
The head coach for Purdue is Jeff Broh and for Tennessee is Josh Heupel. Purdue football had not played in more than five years when they participated in the 2018 Music City Bowl. That year they lost to Auburn (63-14) but later redeemed themselves in 2021 by winning against Tennessee (48-45).
