Connecticut Huskies vs Marshall University Thundering Herd

The stage is set at Brooks Stadium in South Carolina for the Myrtle Beach Bowl game between the University of Connecticut Huskies and the Marshall University Thundering Herd on December 19. As an ESPN national broadcast, the Myrtle Beach Bowl is drawing plenty of attention because these two teams have a history dating back to 2015.

In essence, the 2022 Myrtle Beach Bowl is a rematch of the 2015 St Petersburg Bowl, which Marshall won with a score of 16-10. UConn has not been selected for any college bowl games since that loss. The last bowl appearance for Marshall was in 2018 at the Gasparilla Bowl in Tampa, where the team prevailed over the University of South Florida, which enjoyed home-field advantage, with an exciting 38-20 victory.

While history appears to be on the side of the Thundering Herd for this game, it is important to note that the Huskies have played a refreshed season under the leadership of coach Jim Mora, who has previously taken UCLA to four consecutive bowls and two victories. Mora was signed by UConn with the specific intent of staging a revolution and a strong comeback after the team missed an entire season during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Huskies are currently a .500 team, but they have defeated the likes of Florida International University and Boston College.

There is no question that the Thundering Herd arrive with better numbers. It is not often that you get to see NCAA teams with a winning streak of four games, but that is exactly how Marshall managed to be selected to play the Myrtle Beach Bowl. Marshall is currently in the national top 10 in terms of defense and scoring. With regard to proximity to the stadium, Marshall fans will find it easier to travel from the campus in West Virginia to South Carolina.

As for gridiron strategy, you can expect this game to be a rushing festival with plenty of defense. Watch out for running back Victor Rosa of the Huskies; he really knows how to find spaces in unexpected places. Marshall’s running back Khalan Laborn is a powerful scoring machine who has run 16 touchdowns this season. Unless Huskies coach Mora breaks out the passing game playbook and leaves it up to quarterback Ta’Quan Roberson, Marshall will likely rush through scoring drives with ease. Sports betting analysts in Las Vegas have their money on the Thundering Herd.
