Penn State vs Utah

The Rose Bowl is one of the most iconic postseason events in college sports, and this year’s game will be extra special because it is the last before it becomes a part of the College Football Playoff (CFP) rotation. This year, Penn State will take on Utah in a game that features two teams that both won 10 games this regular season. Penn State will be appearing for the 4th time, Utah, on the other hand is appearing for the first time in the Rose bowl on January 2nd.

While most watch the game for the match, many are also drawn in by the Tournament of Roses parade. At halftime, you are sure to be marvelled with the Rose Parade and the marching bands in the 109th Rose Bowl game.

How Did We Get Here?

Utah won the Pac-12 championship by defeating USC 47-24 in the conference title game. The Utes also defeated USC 43-42 in the regular season, and those two victories likely kept the Trojans out of the CFP. In addition, Utah beat Oregon State 42-16 at home in October.

Penn State was awarded a trip to the Rose Bowl after Michigan and Ohio State qualified for the CFP. In September, the Nittany Lions traveled to Auburn where they defeated the Tigers 42-16 in what was probably the school’s best win of the year.

Players to Watch For

The Utes offense is going to go as far as quarterback Cam Rising can take them. He threw for nearly 3,000 yards, rushed for roughly 400 yards, and accounted for 31 total touchdowns over the course of 12 games. Receiver Dalton Kincaid was Rising’s favorite target this year catching 70 passes for 890 yards and seven touchdowns. R.J. Hubert, Karene Reid and Cole Bishop are all important players for the Utes defense that has five players who tallied four or more sacks.

On offense, look for Penn State to try to run the ball early and often. The running back duo of Nicolas Singleton and Kaytron Allen each had more than five yards per carry during the regular season and combined for 19 touchdowns on the ground. On defense, Ji’Ayir Brown and Abdul Carter are both capable of wreaking havoc on opposing offenses. Brown had three sacks, three interceptions, and 64 tackles this regular season. Carter had more than six sacks to go along with 51 tackles in 11 games played.
