About Louisville Cardinals Football

Louisville Cardinal
Louisville Cardinal by Kentuckyguard – Kentucky National Guard Public Affairs Office under CC BY 2.0.

American football team Louisville’s program started in 1912. And it has been successful. The Cardinals have won a total of 8 conference championships. But those conferences have changed over the years. They have won the Missouri Valley Conference, Conference USA, and Big East.

The team is currently in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), which it joined in 2014. Although they have had strong teams, they have yet to win a championship in the ACC.

The school plays its football games at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium, also known as Cardinal Stadium. It can hold more than 60,000 fans when at full capacity.

The Cardinals are led by head coach Jeff Brohm as well as offensive coordinator Brian Brohm. Louisville splits defensive coaching duties between Mark Hagen and Ron English. Receiver Caulin Lacy, who had 91 catches for over 1,300 yards and seven touchdowns, is the top player on the Cardinal offense heading into 2024.

On defense, the team is led by Quincy Riley and Aston Gillette. The corner and defensive end were both named to the All-ACC preseason team along with Lacy and six other players. The nine overall selections were most in the conference and indicate high expectations for the team this season.

Cincinnati and Miami are among Louisville’s chief rivals on the football field. However, those rivalries pale in comparison to the one that the program has with Kentucky. The schools play each other every year typically on the final week of the regular season. There is an agreement in place to keep the rivalry going until at least 2030.

Notable players include quarterbacks Lamar Jackson and Johnny Unitas. Jackson won the Heisman Trophy in 2016 and is currently playing for the Baltimore Ravens.

What Is the Louisville Cardinals Football Schedule for This Season?

The Louisville Cardinals began last season 10-1 and were a dark horse candidate to make a College Football Playoff (CFP) appearance. However, they would lose in the ACC title game and make an appearance in the Holiday Bowl.

This season, Louisville plays Notre Dame on Sep 28, which is the team’s biggest game of the year. Other games against ranked opponents include road games against Clemson and Kentucky and a home date against Miami.

Entering 2024, the Cardinals do not have any claimed or unclaimed national titles. The team won the last of its eight conference titles as a member of the Big East in 2012. Louisville has appeared in nine bowl games since joining the ACC in 2013 with postseason berths in each of the last three seasons.

FAQs

Who are some of Louisville’s most famous student-athletes?

Lamar Jackson played quarterback for the school until 2016 and was chosen in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft. He is currently the quarterback of the Baltimore Ravens. Johnny Unitas played for the school during the 1950s and is the only player in Louisville football history to have his number retired.

Is Louisville a good football team?

Louisville’s performance varies from season to season. As per their performances in recent seasons of college football, Louisville is considered a competitive team.
