Texas Longhorns Football

The University of Texas at Austin has one of the largest and best-known football programs in the US. For much of its existence, it has regularly competed for both conference and national titles.

The team plays its home games at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium, which seats just over 100,000 people. It is named after Darrell K Royal, the team’s head coach from 1957 to 1976, and he led them to three national championships.

The Texas Longhorns are joining the SEC this season after winning a Big 12 title on their way out. After winning the Big 12, the Longhorns made an appearance in the College Football Playoff (CFP) where they lost to Washington 37-31.

Steve Sarkisian returns this season in hopes of leading Texas back to the playoffs and a national championship. Kyle Flood serves as offensive coordinator this year while Pete Kwiatkowski is the defensive coordinator. Malik Muhammad and Anthony Hill are two of the most important players on the defensive side of the ball while Quinn Ewers is the most important player on offense.

It’s uncertain whether backup quarterback Arch Manning will get more playing time this year. There are few gimme games on the schedule where the team might be ahead by so much in the fourth quarter that the backups come in. His best opportunities look to come against Texas San-Antonio (UTSA) or against the University of Louisiana-Monroe (ULM)

The school’s most important games this year include contests against top-ranked Georgia and their annual rivalry game against Oklahoma. As usual, the Red River Shootout is going to be played at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.

Coming into this season, the Longhorns have won four official national championships, and their last title came in 2005 after defeating USC in the Rose Bowl. The school also has five unofficial national titles in addition to 33 conference titles.

In addition to Oklahoma, the school has long-standing rivalries with Texas Tech and Texas A&M. The annual game against Texas A&M is part of the Lone Star Showdown series.

Running back Earl Campell is probably the school’s most famous product with Vince Young and Colt McCoy among others that have had productive careers in the NFL. T’Vondre Sweat and Bijan Robinson are current NFL players who are projected to have long and successful careers.

FAQs

When will the Texas Longhorns join the SEC?

The school was scheduled to join the SEC at the start of the 2025 football season. However, this has changed and they will start the 2024 season in the SEC. The move is complicated and changes things in a few conferences. The Big 12 is also losing Oklahoma. But the conference is adding Arizona, Arizona State, and Utah

Which teams are Texas’ biggest rivals?

Oklahoma is generally considered to be Texas’ biggest rival. Each year, the two teams play in the Red River Shootout as part of their conference schedule. In 2022, Texas gave Oklahoma one of its worst beatings ever in a 49-0 defeat. The 2023 matchup was closely fought with Oklahoma scoring a touchdown with 15 seconds remaining to win 34-30.

The team also considers a variety of other teams as rivals: Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Nebraska, TCU, Rice, and Baylor to be rivals. Texas currently plays Baylor on a regular basis as they are both in the Big 12. When the Longhorns join the SEC, it will represent a chance to resume their rivalry with Texas A&M.
