The Whelen Modified Tour

The Whelen Modified Tour is the oldest NASCAR racing series and it features, as the name implies, modified stock car racing. It is a short track race (less than one mile per lap — often much less).

It was formed in 1947 and had its first race in 1948. The tour races are mostly on short oval tracks with a few on longer oval tracks and road courses.

The tour was named NASCAR Modified Championship from 1947 to 1984. It was changed to NASCAR Winston Modified in 1985 and then NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series in 1994. In 2005, Whelen Engineering started sponsoring the races and it has since been called the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour (NWMT).

The Whelen Modified Tour cars are quite different from other NASCAR race cars. There are a lot of modifications allowed in terms of the height, weight, engine components, and body styles of the car.

Some of the improvements made for safety reasons include: removing straight frame rails, new chassis that bend on high impacts, having HANS devices (to support the head/neck), shortening rear bumpers, and having marine rope as tethers to link from the spindle to the chassis.

As of 2010, there have been some regular Cup Series drivers who have participated in the Whelen Modified Tour races. There are also some Whelen Modified Tour veterans who have competed in Cup Series and Truck Series races — and even won.

The tour is not nationally broadcast it does have a strong regional fan base. Fans who want to watch all season long need to sign-up with FloRacing since it has exclusive rights to air every race live.

Streaming Whelen Modified Tour Races

If you don’t mind watching races long after they run, you can get any streaming service that offers USA Network. The cheapest source for this is the Sling Blue plan, which gives you USA and 40+ other channels for just $40.00/mo (see the schedule of races on Sling). More complete plans are offered by Fubo — ($79.99/mo) and DIRECTV STREAM — ($79.99/mo).

But if you want to watch live, you have only one choice: FloRacing. It not only provides live access to every Modified Tour race but many others that don’t get covered like the ARCA series.

FloRacing also gives you access to all the other FloSports content. It costs $29.99/mo but they offer a great deal on the yearly plan: $149.99/yr or just $12.50/mo.
