The UCL final is, in most fans’ opinions, the greatest club soccer match in the world — or at least in Europe. It features the final two European clubs standing at the end of an 11-month competition. As a result, it garners tremendous television ratings around the world.

In the United States, 5.4 million people watched the 2022 final, 2.8 million of them on CBS and 2.6 million on Univision. How can you watch the Champions League final?

If your focus is just on UEFA Champions League final, you can get it all with a subscription to Paramount+ for just $4.99 per month.

The Spanish-language broadcast should be available on Univision. UniMas is a less likely possibility. Regardless, Univision NOW ($10.99/mo) offers access to both.

What Is the Champions League Final?

The Champions League final is the culmination of an 80-team competition involving clubs from 54 countries playing over an 11-month span. It gets reduced to the two playing in this match and the one lifting the trophy at the end of it.

History of the Champions League Final

The first Champions League final, then called the European Cup final, was played on Jun 13th, 1956, when Real Madrid outlasted Reims, 4-3, in front of 38,239 at Paris’ historic Parc des Princes. Just 16 clubs took part in this competition, which involved some teams getting in via invites. This feature continued for four more years before the clubs started to all be selected on merit.

Real Madrid was the early powerhouse of this competition, claiming its first five editions before being stunned by Barcelona, 4-3 on aggregate, in the 1960-61 first round. The Catalan side ultimately advanced to the final, where they fell short of fellow Iberian club, Benfica, 3-2, in Bern, Switzerland.

The initial club from the British Isles to lift this trophy was Celtic, who did so after defeating Inter Milan, 2-1, in the 1967 final, played in Lisbon, Portugal. Manchester United followed suit a year later, cruising past Benfica, 3-1, while playing in its home country. London’s Wembley Stadium hosted that match.

Real Madrid has also been a recent dynasty, claiming four Champions League finals in a five-year span, winning every one between 2014-18 with the exception of 2015, which was claimed by Barcelona. The winners that followed this run were Liverpool (2019), Bayern Munich (2020), and Chelsea (2021).

What Is the Format of the Champions League Final?

Except for the preliminary round semifinals and final at the very start of the competition and this match at the end, every step of the Champions League involves clubs playing their opponents twice — once at home and once away. This includes the round of 16, quarter-finals, and semi-finals.

However, the final has always been played as a single match at a predetermined site. Sometimes, a team will play the final in its home stadium – Bayern Munich in 2012 is a recent example – but the match is still treated as a neutral site as far as every other aspect of the game is concerned, including ticket allotment.

The locations of the coming final are as follows:

  • 2024: London, UK
  • 2025: Munich, Germany.

There has been some talk of holding the 2026 edition in the United States but this has sparked much controversy given that this would be the first time the event was ever held outside Europe.

At least one club from every UEFA country with the exception of Liechtenstein enters this competition. (Liechtenstein is not included because it does not have its own league; all of its clubs play in Switzerland’s league setup.) The majority of these teams are eliminated, however, by the time the group stage starts in September when the competition’s giant clubs join.
