The Teams

Saudi Arabia vs Mexico is the final matchup for Group C, where the two teams and Poland are expected to compete for second place and earn a berth in the round of 16, with number three-ranked Argentina and superstar Lionel Messi as heavy favorites to win the group.

Saudi Arabia

Team Nickname: The Green Men
Manager: Herve Renard
Captain: Salman Al-Faraj
Key Player: Salem Al-Dawsari
FIFA Ranking: 53rd
Qualifiers Results: 7-1-2

Historically, Saudi Arabia has not fared well in previous World Cup tournaments, having only qualified six times. They have advanced to the Round of 16 only once, back in 1994. However, as Qatar borders Saudi Arabia to the east, the team’s supporters are sure to turn out in large numbers, giving them a distinct home-field advantage.

Saudi Arabia’s main strength is the team’s chemistry, with all of its players coming from one of three teams that play in the Saudi Pro League. Despite being the third-lowest-ranked team in this year’s tournament, they put up a strong showing in the qualifiers, only losing one game to Japan.

The team’s best chance at advancing lies with their top scorer in the qualifiers, Salem Al-Dawsari, who scored seven goals. Unfortunately, the team will be playing without Midfielder Fahad al-Mowallad, who was recently pulled from the team after testing positive for furosemide, a diuretic often used as a masking agent for PEDs.

Replacing al-Mowallad on the roster will be his 32-year-old Al-Shabab teammate, Nawaf Al-Abed, who scored only two goals in 19 appearances for the team last year. He did, however, score four goals in the team’s qualifiers before the 2018 FIFA tournament.

In the past, the team’s experienced manager Herve Renard has heavily favored the 4-2-3-1 formation. However, in preparation for their upcoming appearances in Group C, the team is now practicing in 4-3-3, the same formation that the Mexican National Team has used to great success.

Mexico

Team Nickname: El Tri
Manager: Gerardo Martino
Captain: Andres Guardado
Key Player: Raul Jimenez
FIFA Ranking: 12
Qualifiers Results: 8-2-4

Mexico has qualified for the tournament every year since 1994, although they have not reached the Round of 16 since 1986. The team suffered a devastating loss when midfielder Jesus ‘Tecatito’ Corona suffered an ankle injury that will prevent him from being able to participate in this year’s tournament.

In the qualifiers, the team found success by winning a series of low-scoring contests, averaging just over one goal scored per game. If their strong defense holds, they could easily win a 1-0 game against the Green Men.

Mexico may be playing without Santiago Giménez, the current top scorer in the UEFA Europa League. He was excluded from the roster in favor of Raul Jiminez, who has not competed in recent months due to injury. If Jiminez is unable to compete due to lingering effects, Giménez is expected to get the call as his replacement.

Previous Head-to-Head Matchups

Despite both teams having made multiple appearances in the past, Mexico and Saudi Arabia have never faced each other in any of the previous tournaments. The last time the two nations played each other was nearly 25 years ago, at a friendly in February of 1998, which went to a 0-0 draw.

About The Stadium

The match will be played at the new Lusail Iconic Stadium, which will celebrate its first anniversary on November 22nd. It is the country’s largest association football arena and can accommodate up to 80,000 fans. It will also be the venue for the tournament’s final match, which is scheduled to be held on Sunday, December 18th.

What to Know Before You Go

The top two teams from Group C will advance to the Knockout Stage and face the winners from Group D, which consists of Australia, France, Denmark, and Tunisia. The top finisher in Group C will face the runner-up from Group D and the runner-up from Group C will face the winner of Group D.

Although Mexico is heavily favored to win the matchup, there are upsets in every tournament and Saudi Arabia is not to be counted out so quickly. Either team could advance to the Round of 16, although that will likely depend on their performances against Poland.
