Following an extraordinary run to the 2018 World Cup Final in Russia, featuring back-to-back wins on penalties in the knockout stage, Croatia has taken a rather uneven road to Qatar.

Team Croatia’s Background

Croatia surprised so many four years ago, when it made a push all the way to the World Cup final, causing mass celebrations throughout that relatively small country of 4 million before coming up just short of the ultimate prize, dropping the final to France, 4-2.

Since that historic summer, the Adriatic side advanced to the round of 16 at Euro 2020 before falling at that stage in a 5-3 high-scoring affair with Spain that went to extra time.

The Vatreni twice had mediocre placements in League A of the Nations League before winning its group earlier this year to advance to June’s semifinal round.

The Croatian team has just one match on its fixture list between wrapping up Nations League play and opening its World Cup campaign, an away-friendly with Saudi Arabia on Nov. 16.

Luka Modric, who was one of the faces of the 2018 World Cup, is back at 37 years of age to lead his Croatian side at a final World Cup before retiring from the national team. His leadership and play will be pivotal to the team’s chances of recreating some of that magic from four years ago.
