If you want to really experience football the way it is meant to be enjoyed, Portugal is a great place to be during the World Cup. In this charming part of the Iberian Peninsula, football is a national passion, particularly when the national team, known as the Selecao or the Navigators, competes in the Cup. Qatar 2022 is the eighth appearance of the Navigators in the Cup, and star striker Cristiano Ronaldo has vowed to lead the team to absolute victory prior to his retirement.
As befits a country where the beautiful game is king, Portugal offers various options for keeping up with the Cup on television, streaming devices, or with other fans at bars, cafes, and street parties specifically set up for this purpose. Let’s review your various options.

Watching Qatar 2022 on Television in Portugal
In an effort to make things somewhat equitable, the Federação Portuguesa de Futebol and FIFA granted broadcasting rights to the following national broadcasters:
* Sport TV: All 64 matches
* RTP Rádio e Televisão de Portugal: 22 matches
* TVI Televisão Independente: 7 matches
* SIC Sociedade Independente de Comunicação: 7 matches
Sport TV is a media giant that has been dominating the football broadcasting landscape in Portugal for many years. With seven channels featuring sports from all over the world, Sport TV is like the ESPN of Portugal, and it can be obtained by subscribing to specific premium packages from cable and satellite television providers such as Vodafone, Altice, MEO, and others. If you don’t see a Qatar 2022 match broadcasting on Sport TV 1, you will find it on Sport TV 2, and you can look for replays on both channels hours after the live broadcast.
RTP, TVI, and SIC are “canais de sinal aberto” (over-the-air) digital stations that require a television reception license, which is automatically collected each month by means of a small fee included in the electricity bill. All you need is a digital antenna connected to a reasonably modern TV set in order to get the RTP, TVI, and SIC signals. Older analog TV sets will require a digital tuner. Each of these channels will broadcast one Selecao match in the group stage; we’ll let you know which in the schedule section below.

If you are a Sport TV subscriber, for example, you can access the network’s streaming platform by means of registering on the Sport TV Play website; from here, you have the option of viewing on a web browser or installing a mobile app.
RTP Play is the streaming version of the Portuguese national TV network, and it is available from its website or mobile app. If you are a Vodafone cable or IPTV subscriber, for example, you should be able to install the RTP Play app from your client account. The same can be said about TVI Play, but SIC does not yet offer a streaming option.
It is important to keep in mind that the streaming options listed above are region-locked to Portugal, which means that you will need to access with a Portuguese IP address.

There is a good chance the Navigators will advance to the knockout stages, and with the Cup playing close to Natal (the Portuguese holiday season), there will be good reasons to get into a festive spirit while in Portugal. With this in mind, you should make it a point to attend a World Cup viewing party such as the ones set up at Praça do Comércio in Lisbon; these are events that play the match on giant outdoor screens.
