Team Qatar’s Background

Qatar may surprise at this World Cup as it brings more quality than many realize. Although this will be the first World Cup that it will participate in, Qatar is the current Asian Cup holder, having claimed that trophy in 2019, its most recent iteration. In that competition, which was held at the nearby United Arab Emirates, Qatar went undefeated in its seven matches, which culminated with a 3-1 win over Japan in the final.

The country has kept itself busy in 2022, playing numerous official friendlies during FIFA breaks, official friendlies outside of FIFA windows, and unofficial friendlies against club teams. It has the flexibility to do this with its top players since its entire World Cup squad is comprised of players with Qatari club teams.

Qatar will bring a five-match friendly winning streak into the main event. Those victories came against Nicaragua, 2-1, Guatemala, 2-0, Honduras, 1-0, Panama, 2-1, and Albania, 1-0. However, it should be noted that their opponents did not have their full allotment of top players in any of those cases.

The Middle East country has not played a competitive match since 2021, when it wrapped up Asian Cup qualifying in June, advanced to the semifinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup that summer as a guest team, and finished in third place at the regional Arab Cup in December.
