I always loved Hulu for its on-demand content, but I’ll also compare it to other live TV streaming services to see how it stacks up as a complete cable replacement option.

Local Channels on Hulu + Live TV

Hulu + Live TV offers the four major local channels, plus a couple more:

Like all local channels, you can only access the ones broadcast in your area even if Hulu provides it. I entered my current zip code on Hulu’s website and it showed me which channels were available at my location, so it’s worth checking there first. Or you could try Hulu’s free trial to find out first-hand.

I put several zip codes from across the US into Hulu’s website and found most areas could get ABC, CBS, Fox, or NBC. Access to Telemundo and The CW wasn’t quite as reliable, but that’s due to their networks’ lack of coverage regions, not Hulu’s.

Hulu’s Local Channels Compared To Other Streaming Services

Other cable-replacement streaming services provide local channels. All of them are subject to the network being available in your area, but here’s how their offerings compare:

Regional Sports Networks on Hulu + Live TV

In addition to over a dozen national sports channels, Hulu + Live TV has seven RSNs available to those within their coverage region:

• Monumental Sports Network
• NBC Sports Bay Area
• NBC Sports Boston
• NBC Sports California
• NBC Sports Chicago
• NBC Sports Philadelphia
• SportsNet NY

RSNs are where local fans can watch all or almost all MLB, NBA, NHL, and often WNBA games.

How To Find Local Channels on Hulu

Once you’ve signed up for Hulu + Live TV and logged in on your chosen streaming device, you should see a “Live” tab where you’ll find a channel guide. To find a specific local channel, you have two options:

1. Do a quick search for the local channel by name:
   • Click the “Search” icon in the top menu.
   • Type in the channel’s name (for example: “CBS”).
   • Look for the channel in the results list — it will be labeled as a “Network”.
2. Manually browse the live channel guide to find your desired local channel.

Beyond Local Channels

The Hulu + Live TV plan includes 95+ channels in total. These were similar to what I’d expect from a cable subscription, providing a well-rounded range of sports, entertainment, and family channels. Hulu + Live also comes with two of my favorite on-demand streaming services: Disney+ and ESPN+.

You can customize your plan by purchasing add-on bundles, such as the Español or Entertainment packages, to add extra channels. There are specific upgrades for HBO Max, Cinemax, Showtime, and Starz as well.

Hulu On-Demand Library

Hulu started as an on-demand service, so I expected big things from its content library. I was impressed by how quickly new episodes of current shows were uploaded, with most appearing just 24 hours after they aired on live TV.

There are thousands of movies and series to choose from. While maybe not as vast the libraries on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video, I found plenty of Hulu Originals and shows exclusive to Hulu that I think make it worthwhile (including Only Murders in the Building which, if you haven’t seen already, I recommend watching immediately)!

Can you record local channels on Hulu?

You can record local and national channels with Hulu + Live TV. The base plan comes with unlimited cloud DVR storage. All recordings last for 9 months or until you delete them, whichever comes first. There does not appear to be a way to store them longer.
