If you’re used to having cable TV, there’s a chance you watch one of the major local channels in the US. Whether it’s ABC or CBS on in the background, there are key channels that some cable cutters deem necessary with an online streaming service.

Does Hulu offer such channels?

On this page, discuss the local channels available on Hulu, along with all available regional sports networks.

Read on to find out which Hulu package you need to access local channels and what else is included with the monthly subscription plans.

Hulu Overview

What’s important to know is that you do not get local channels with Hulu’s on-demand plans. These plans are the Hulu and Hulu (No Ads) plans. To be able to live stream ABC, CBS, and the other five local channels, you need to get the Hulu + Live TV plan.

Still, if you’re unsure about paying $64.99 for the live TV plan, you might find it useful to begin with one of the cheaper plans. You can still get a 7-day free trial with the live TV plan though.

The standard on-demand Hulu plan costs $5.99 per month, while the same ad-free plan is an extra $6 at $11.99 per month. The Hulu + Live TV plan is also available ad-free (for on-demand content) for $70.99 per month.

PlanPrice Per Month
Hulu (Ads)$5.99
Hulu (No Ads)$11.99
Hulu (Ads) with Disney + and ESPN+$13.99
Hulu (No Ads) with Disney + and ESPN+$19.99
Hulu + Live TV (Ads)$64.99
Hulu + Live TV (No Ads)$70.99
The Disney+ and ESPN+ bundles are also available with the live TV plans.

You get a total of 70+ channels, including more than 10 popular sports networks, 50 hours of free cloud DVR recording space, and the ability to buy several premium network add-ons like HBO Max and Starz.

We documented our user experience of Hulu’s dashboard in our Live TV review and the Hulu on-demand review, so check these out if you’re curious about the platform’s features.

Hulu is contract-free, so you can cancel your plan at any time. There are however 1-year plans available for a discounted rate.

Local Channels On Hulu + Live TV

Hulu with Live TV offers viewers access to all four major local channels, namely, ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC. You also have access to next-day on-demand content through most of the networks, except for CBS. Finally, you get three more local channels with Hulu — see the list below.

Like regional sports networks, local channel availability also depends on your location. The Hulu website has a network checker where you can enter your ZIP code and see what channels are available in your area. Channels often vary from one ZIP code to another, so if you desperately want one of the below, be sure to do your research on Hulu’s site.

The local channels available to watch for Hulu + Live TV customers are:

  • ABC: Available in over 100 markets.
  • CBS: Available in over 100 markets.
  • FOX: Available in over 150 markets.
  • NBC: Available in over 140 markets.
  • PBS: Unclear which regions it’s currently streamable in, but it’s available. PBS is usually limited to very few regions.
  • Telemundo: Restricted in many regions, though available.
  • The CW: One of the few streaming services that have The CW live. Also another heavily restricted channel in particular regions.

Hulu with Live TV is $64.99 per month and there’s no contract so you can cancel at any time. You can even try it out free for 7 days to see what you think.

Local Channel Comparison To Other Streaming Services

Here’s a brief comparison of which other similarly priced streaming service plans give you access to the seven local channels offered by Hulu’s live TV plan.

Note that the below availability includes all live TV plans from these providers. Still, PBS, The CW, and Telemundo can be considered a rarity among online streaming services, yet Hulu offers all three along with the standard four local TV channels.

Popular Shows & Movies On Hulu

Hulu is known for uploading titles to their content library as short as 24-hours after they air on live TV. There are more than 2,500 movies, series, and documentaries in the streaming library, so here’s a little insight on what you can expect.

Hulu is probably most known, especially by the early day users, for its originals series, The Handmaiden’s Tale. The series is based on Canadian author Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel and features an enslaved young woman’s story in a dystopian USA. All seasons and episodes are available with Hulu on-demand.

hulu originals local channels

Other Hulu originals include Solar Opposites, Little Fires Everywhere, Shrill, and Sasquatch.

Notably, FX on Hulu allows you to watch FX originals titles in Hulu’s ‘Hub’. These include The Bridge, Breeders, A Teacher, and Atlanta.

Hulu’s selection of movies is nowhere near as vast as Netflix or Amazon Prime Video, but there are hundreds to choose from. You may stumble across a classic James Bond movie or run into Arnold Schwarzenegger’s mid-war face on your movie dashboard.

family guy Hulu local channels

Popular animations like The Cleveland Show and Family Guy are also available, though Hulu isn’t short of kid-friendly animations either.

There are both externally licensed documentaries and Hulu or FX originals documentaries available in the on-demand streaming library.

Add-On Networks With Hulu

Hulu’s add-ons are straightforward. Unlike Sling TV where you can customize your add-ons, Hulu has a set of add-on bundles you can pack on top of your chosen streaming plan.

Premium channel add-ons include:

  • HBO Max for $14.99 per month
  • Cinemax for $9.99 per month
  • Showtime for $10.99 per month
  • Starz for $8.99 per month

There are also entire channel pack add-ons, like:

  • Entertainment add-on for $7.99/mo with channels like AHC, CNBC World, Cooking Channel, Crime + Investigation, Discovery Family + Life, DIY Network, and the Military History Channel.
  • Espanol add-on for $4.99/mo with CNN en Español, Discovery en Español, Discovery Familia, ESPN Deportes, History Channel en Español, and Universo.

Other add-ons you can get with the Hulu + Live TV plan are the unlimited screen bundle for $9.99 and the enhanced cloud DVR add-on, also for $9.99. If you get both, you only pay $14.99.

The Disney+ and ESPN+ bundle is available with all plans, while the Student Discount plan for $1.99 is only applicable to the Hulu on-demand plan with ads.

How To Find Local Channels on Hulu

Once you sign up with Hulu + Live TV, you get access to a “Live” tab where you’ll find a channel guide. To find local channels like CBS or ABC, you have two options:

  1. Do a quick search for the local channel by name
    • Click the “Search” icon in the top menu
    • Type in the channel’s name (for example: “CBS”)
    • Look for the channel in the results list — it will be labeled as a “Network”
  2. Manually browse the live channel guide to find your desired local channel

If you’re only browsing Hulu’s list of channels, you can find the entire selection on the website. You’ll be able to pick out the local channels by their logos.

If you’re a Hulu on-demand customer, you can upgrade to a Live TV plan in your ‘Accounts’ section.

To see if a local channel is available with a Hulu plan, use Hulu’s network and ZIP code checker tool.

What Devices Can I Watch Local Channels On?

Devices are of secondary importance to your location since the location is what determines whether you get access to one of the local channels.

Still, if you have a mobile device and you’re travelling around the country, it’s useful to know what you can watch and where.

Hulu supports the following devices to stream any channel, including available local channels or regional sports networks on:

  • Android phones and tablets
  • Android TV
  • Apple TV
  • Chromecast
  • Echo Show
  • Fire Tablets
  • Fire TV
  • Fire TV Stick
  • iPhones and iPads
  • Samsung & LG TVs
  • Nintendo Switch
  • Mac and PC browsers/apps
  • PlayStation
  • Roku
  • VIZIO SmartCast TVs
  • Xbox
  • Xfinity Flex Streaming TV Box
  • Xfinity X1 TV Boxes.

Some of these devices have specific model requirements to be able to support Hulu, so be sure to check whether your device is supported.

What Else Do I Get as a Hulu + Live TV Subscriber?

Alongside the streaming library of 2,500+ titles and over 70 cable-free live channels, Hulu + Live TV subscribers get access to the cloud DVR recording feature with 50 hours of storage included for free. Since there are more than 10 sports channels and even more nature and travel networks, the recording feature can come in handy.

As an on-demand customer, you do not have access to the cloud DVR, since you don’t have live TV channels with your account.

Certain add-ons are also only available with the live TV plans, both with ads for $64.99 or ad-free for $70.99. The unlimited screens and enhanced cloud DVR (150 hours extra storage) are two. The Espanol and Entertainment add-ons are also only for live TV subscribers.

Does Hulu have local channels?

There are seven local channels available on Hulu, subject to regional restrictions. Alongside the main four channels, namely, ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC, as a Hulu + Live TV subscriber you get access to PBS, Telemundo, and The CW. Note that the latter three are available in far fewer regions than the main four.

Can I watch local channels on Hulu on-demand?

No, local channels on Hulu are only available with the Hulu + Live TV plan. The on-demand Hulu plan has a range of TV shows, movies, and documentaries with total titles of over 2,500. To get access to local channels on Hulu, you need to subscribe to the $64.99 monthly plan. See this review of the Hulu + Live TV plan.

Does Hulu basic have local channels?

The Hulu (Ads) and Hulu (No Ads) plans are on-demand plans and do not come with any live or local channels. If you want to stream local channels with Hulu, you can get access to all seven, given the availability in your locality, by subscribing to the Hulu + Live TV plan. More than 10 regional sports networks are also included in this package.

Why are my local channels not working on Hulu?

If you are a Hulu + Live TV customer and are missing local channels, it’s most likely because of your present location. Your IP address informs Hulu’s servers about where you are located. If a local channel is restricted in that region or locality, you won’t see it in your Hulu dashboard. Use the ZIP code checker to find out which local channels are included in your area.

Can you record local channels on Hulu?

Yes. Recording with Hulu is possible if you have cloud DVR storage included in your plan since that’s the online storage system that saves your recorded TV shows and movies. The cloud DVR comes with the live TV plan. You get 50 hours included for free and have the opportunity to upgrade to a whole 200 hours for $9.99 per month.
