Cricket is not the most popular sport in the world. It’s the second most popular. More popular than baseball, basketball, or hockey. And way more popular than (American) football. And one of its top events, the 13th ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, will be held October 5 through November 19.

It’s been a long time coming — like other World Cups, the Cricket World Cup (CWC) is only held every four years. Following a new format for 2023, qualification has taken place over the last three years since the previous ICC World Cup. The host nation is automatically qualified.

Ten teams remain — which will prevail?

ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Overview

The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup is organized by the International Cricket Council and is played in a series of One Day International (ODI) cricket matches, and is sometimes called the ODI World Cup. ODI games are only about eight hours long, instead of the days-long Test matches or the short-form T20 games.

Australia is the overall leader in trophies, having won five times. The defending champion is England, which finally took home the silverware for the first time in 2019. This year, the competition is being held in India.

As host country, India automatically qualifies. The ten teams competing in the tournament phase of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup are:

  • India
  • Afghanistan
  • Australia
  • Bangladesh
  • England
  • New Zealand
  • Pakistan
  • South Africa
  • Sri Lanka
  • Netherlands

How to Watch Cricket on Sling TV

One advantage that cricket has over soccer is being limited to just a few broadcasters. Although ESPN+ has moved into cricket coverage and managed to get exclusive deals for some regional leagues, Willow TV is still the home of cricket.

And while you can buy Willow HD directly, it’s just as cheap to get it from Sling TV. And you can combine Willow TV with Sling’s amazing collection of packages.

Willow TV Packages on Sling TV

You can also add the Willow Cricket Mini package for $5/mo with either of their base plans, Sling Orange or Sling Blue ($40.00/mo each), which come with dozens of live TV channels and on-demand content.

Finally, it offers far more support for streaming devices. Both support the standard ones: Amazon Fire TV (Firestick), Android mobile, Android TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, iOS (iPhone), Roku, Samsung, and Xbox. But Sling offers other things like Google Nest, Oculus, and TIVO Stream. See our Sling TV Devices page for more.

The venues will rotate around ten stadiums around India:

  • Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad
  • M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru
  • M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai
  • Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi
  • HPCA Stadium, Dharamshala

The new qualifying process primarily uses the 2023 Cricket World Cup Super League, instead of ODI rankings. Because of the new system, this will be the first ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup without the West Indies, and full ICC members Ireland and Zimbabwe also failed to pass the qualifiers. The only full member who qualified outside of the Super League was Sri Lanka.

FAQ

What is the prize for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup?

The winner of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup wins US$4 million. The runner-up receives US$2 million, and semifinalists get US$800,000 each. These top prizes are the same as in 2019. There are also cash prizes for the winners of each league stage match and the teams that don’t pass the league stage. The total prize money to be distributed is US$10 million.

Is there any cricket not on Willow TV?

Willow TV does not have the rights to every cricket match. As we noted above, ESPN+ has moved into cricket and has gained rights to some important events. The most notable is the Indian Premier League — the top cricket league in India.

Mostly, however, ESPN+ shares events with Willow. But if you want to make sure you have access to everything, sign up with Sling TV and ESPN+.

Why aren’t people more interested in cricket in the United States?

In a word: history. Baseball is very similar to cricket. And for many reasons, it took off in popularity in the 19th century and there really wasn’t much of an opening for cricket.

But things may be changing, at least in the US. The 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will be held in the United States. This is the first time a major cricket event will be hosted here. That in itself is an indication of rising popularity. And, as we have seen over the past couple of decades with soccer, hosting greatly expands the reach of the sport. Every match of the FIFA World Cup was broadcast on major US channels — in English and Spanish!
