About the Monaco Grand Prix: History, Track Length, Winners

The Monaco Grand Prix is one of the three most famous motor races in the world, alongside the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Indianapolis 500. Together, these races make up a Triple Crown of automobile races.

Usually held on the last weekend in May, the Monaco Grand Prix often clashes with the Indianapolis 500. This makes it difficult for racers to compete in both within the same year.

A narrow track makes the Monaco circuit a fairly dangerous one. It’s also the shortest Grand Prix race, at 260km (162 miles) – the only one permitted below the F1’s minimum race distance of 305km (190 miles).

Ayrton Senna holds the record for most victories at Monaco, having won the race six times. He won consecutively for five years between 1989 and 1993.

Max Verstappen (driving for Red Bull Racing-Honda) won last year’s race, marking his second win at Monaco. Fernando Alonso (for Aston Martin Aramco-Mercedes) came second and Esteban Ocon (for Alpine-Renault) finished third. Lewis Hamilton clocked the fastest lap with a time of .650.

FAQs

Can I watch Monaco Grand Prix for free?

It depends on where you live. The Formula One broadcast rights are held by ESPN in the US, with five races (including the Monaco Grand Prix) airing on ABC. If you live in an area that receives ABC and are willing to set up an antenna, you might be able to watch over-the-air for free.

If you don’t live within an ABC select market or don’t want to set up an antenna, you’ll need to pay for a cable or streaming plan that offers ESPN to stream F1 online. The Sling Orange plan is usually the cheapest way to do this.

Will the Monaco Grand Prix stream on ESPN3?

According to the ESPN press office at the time of writing, yes, the Monaco Grand Prix will be available on ESPN3, though likely as a full replay. It will also be live on ESPN+, which is ESPN’s dedicated streaming service (available separately or as part of a Hulu package). It offers exclusive live events and on-demand shows, but doesn’t provide access to ESPN’s traditional TV channels – you’ll still need a cable or streaming plan to watch those.

What is F1 TV?

F1 TV Pro is Formula One’s dedicated streaming service. It provides live coverage of every race weekend, including exclusive pre- and post-analysis shows, and lets subscribers “ride” onboard with all 20 drivers.

F1 TV Pro works on most portable devices, such as iOS and Android tablets and phones, plus Amazon Fire, Apple TV, and Roku. F1 TV Pro is available in the USA, Canada, and India, but not in several other English-speaking countries, such as the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. This is due to broadcast rights (eg, Sky Sports owns exclusive rights in the UK until 2029).

Where are the other F1 Grand Prix races?

There are 24 races in the 2024 Formula One World Championship, including three in the USA.
